Nevermind Eskom...

Driving in SA is going to be more expensive than going into the CBD of Singapore by car or taxi. The ERP system there works by a wireless connection with a dashboard box which contains a cashcard and automatically debits it each time the user drives under an active ERP gate.

Wonder if we'll get the same system here.

LOL - 100 Billion needed to fix roads but we spent 63 Billion on the world cup. Nice. This reminds me of these guys with BMW 3 and 5 series who are too cheap to buy medical aid.

Your number plate will be chipped and the etag system will work.

Where does the money go to? Only roads or back to governments coffers so they can spend it elsewhere again. You think they'd introduce a maximum cap of R50 or something so trucks/delivery vehicles don't get completely screwed for driving around the city all day.

What's the alternative?
Build more roads with our diminishing money?

People will not car pool / use public transport unless you force them to.

And if these tolls are encourage car pooling, why did we extend the roads then? The money would have been better spend on a very good bus or rail systems.

You have heard about lane allocation right?
Those extra lanes are all going to be dedicated to public transport.

We cannot keep on building more and more and more roads, they cost a fortune to maintain.

Didnt know that the lanes would be allocated to public transport, makes more sense now.

Has anyone one else read the book "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand or is it just me and John Galt? The premise in the book is that the Hero - John Galt - removes all those people that form the glue that holds society together, leaving the parasitic and altruistic organisations to wade in the poo that they create. Definitely worth a read as are her other little known books "The New Intellectual" and "The Virtues of Selfishness" especially in today's context...

So what to do about our dilemma so clearly explained by this thread : as I see it, we have 3 options:-
1.Fight like hell against it, knowing all the while that we are but a flea trying to move an elephant.
2.Grumble under our breath that "die Vet van die Transvaal " is alive and well and now called "the policy of redistribution of wealth" while we pay up anyway knowing that the beneficiaries are the black diamonds and not the intended needy populous
3.Drop out of the rat race - as considered in "Atlas Shrugged"

Prior to 1994, Government screwed labour. Since 1994 Government and labour have been screwing entrepreneurs But it appears that that is not enough for our government as it is now going to now milk their electorate as well.

This time there is a slight difference however... our people were taught in the years of the struggle that they have a power that can topple a government. So I expect a lot more violent protests in the future as the going gets tougher.

As for me I choose no 3. I intend to go to ground, fly under the radar, become a non person and watch the poo hit the fan from the sideline. If you choose any other option you are going to have duck and dodge, hoping that the poo misses you.

The massive spend on roads and highways are what fueled the economies of Germany under the Nazis, the USA in the 60's and 70's, and China today. Go do some research and see how drastically China is expanding their road infrastructure.

PS... Public transport is absolutely useless if you don't have law and order in a country. I will never even consider using it. Getting on a bus after I work late, when its dark, and there is zero police visibility or presence, and me with my cellphone, wallet, laptop and watch.... right ... i'm sure i will make it home just fine.

if that's the case why not everyone drive without plates???
I'm tired of living in a democratic dictatorship, makes it very depressing.

fully agree, unfortunately the ANC opted for instant gratification in its "redevelopment" system rather than long term development. who cares about uplifting people with economic power when you can build them a R30k cement brick shack and they'll be happy for 5 years. Then blame it all on apartheid when everything crumbles. just look at the redevelopment of countries devestated by WW2 to understand how poorly our government has organised itself.

Good point. It only takes 1-2 skollies to spoil it for everyone. I'm sure there will be more entrepreneurs eager to take advantage of the targets.

As someone once said on this forum "They, the criminals are just trying to make a living."

Just move to Cape Town. You know you want to be here anyway :D

(We haz mountain...)

You gotta be kiddin'

What is the fascination with that mountain, anyway? it seems almost sexual! When you guys going to finish the damn thing? before or after the vuvuzela motorway?

What public transport? If I need to go to Boksburg on business from Roodepoort during the day which public transport is it that I must use? If I am going to be charged 50c a Km for the new lanes, I want to be able to bloody well use them!

I Reckon we all boycott/strike, if everyone removes their numberplate in protest and not pays these tolls, they honestly cannot arrest everyone, they cannot just make their own rules and we must obey like sheep. If we all stand together, they cannot make us criminals for not letting them rape us.... the power is really in our hands... look at how the french had a revolution, the power belongs to the people... NEVER FORGET THAT... you can vote with your wallet
