Nevermind was released today- 30 years ago.

I was just entering high school in the early 90s, and a new friend who I had just met a few weeks before through skating hands me a cassette in class and tells me "listen to this"

that was it, no name on the cassette nothing, and when I got home I played that cassette over and over and over, in time I would come to know the band Nirvana, and the album Nevermind.

That opened a new world for me, and my journey into music has not stopped.

Ironically though, I hate Nevermind these days, I hardly listen to it and I only own one copy of it on CD which I bought during high school. I have their other albums on vinyl as well and box sets, singles etc, but I can't listen to nevermind anymore.

I've thought a lot about this to decide for myself if they were overrated or not. For sure they did rip off other artists in a major way.

And their whole song structure with alternating quiet-loud refrains was lifted straight from the Pixies:

But it's hard to deny that they could write some killer songs and Kurt Cobain's whole attitude was so original that it just shredded all the mainstream rock music we'd been listening to until then.

On balance I think if you had already been immersed in 80s alternative bands like Killing Joke, Pixies, Jesus and Mary Chain, Dinosaur Jr, Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine etc, then you'd probably see Nirvana as overrated. But I think they were a pretty great band nonetheless.

Being a good band and being overrated aren’t mutually exclusive. They’re definitely a good band but the way some people deify them seems to stem more from romanticism, nostalgia and perhaps even peer-pressure than their actual music.

Yeah but just remember that they were basically a watershed moment in rock music for a LOT of people. Back then we didn't have any way of hearing anything that wasn't like... GnR or Def Leppard or some other glam rock shyte.

But still I kind of agree they were overrated. I don't like to listen to them much anymore except the unplugged album. They were just starting to get good...

Yes, definitely for people who grew up in the time. But there are also a lot of teens from later generations who were mesmerized by Nirvana. A lot of teens today are obsessed by Nirvana and surely that only/mostly stems from the status they’ve received and not based on their music?

Not sure teens today would be into classic rock? In 1991 were you listening to Elvis or the Tokens, in fact some of those I only listened to cause they were on the Fallouts sound track
