Check it out at www.playneverwinter.com.

The first beta weekend ended recently. There are atleast 2 more coming up in March. You can get access if you buy one of the founder packs. Check out lots of clips on youtube since press and beta members were allowed to stream the first beta weekend.

The game has brought back ideas from various MMO's ,

- Holy trinity but redefined it abit (WoW, Rift?)
- Character dodging of GW2 is there.
- Action combat of Terra is there but with enhancement and in my opinion makes it easier and more fluid combat.
- User made content is there (Star trek online?)
- Events popping up in the day and night added to your calendar.

I have not played it my self only watched other people playing, for a game that will be Free to download and Free to play it looks awesome.

Yeh it looks so generic and dated that if I didnt know better I would be thinking that they are competing with everquest or any game from about 2004. They are just milking the IP dont waste your time.

There is at least 5 free to play games that looks and playes much better.

Please mention them?

Everquest 2
Dungeons and Dragons Online
Star Wars the Old Rebublic.
Lord of the Rings Online
Perfect World

And the all play and look better than Neverwinter, Im in the beta for Neverwinter but it really feels so dated and clunky that I would much rather play any of the titles above as it feels more solid and polished. I uninstalled it after playing about 6 hours, its got nothing to do with AD&D either as they asre just raping the IP for the last little bit its got left. THe last good forgotten realms game was neverwinter nights 2.

I was in the beta for all the games above and none of them was so clunky or frustrating.

I play guild wars 2 and comparing anything of Neverwinter especially the combat is a complete joke ,they are not even in the same ballpark.

The combat i was referring to was Terra's (action combat style, point cursor not select with mouse), the only things similar to Guild Wars2 for me was dodging but not like the animation or feel just the concept.

I love Guild Wars 2 , I am playing it again even though there is not much to do, it looks beautiful and plays awesome ;) Like I said I have not played it only seen some steams, so you saying it "feels" clunky i would have to take your word for it since you can't really judge until you have felt the gameplay for your self.

But here is something interesting I play Path of Exile and it has major clunky gameplay, yet it is one of the best games I have played in a very long time. This i think is due to the game design choices. Comparing that to Diablo 3 that has flawless gameplay but not much else.

My problem at the moment is I don't really have a "permanent" MMO at the moment. Guild Wars 2 keeps me busy when doing the daily or dungeon run , Wow bores me to death and the same for Star Wars and Aion. So basically looking forward to trying out the following.

Neverwinter
Elder Scrolls Online
Marvelheroes

But thanks for the feedback GoofySmurf , always good to hear an opinion from someone who has already tried it.

So after the break and playing the second Beta weekend, I will contradict almost everything GoofySmurf said.

The one large thing to remember here is that you are dealing with WotC, not pure DnD....

Ok, next, the combat.

The saying "different strokes for different folks" clearly does ring true here, as this is the first purely ground based MMO (I currently play STO) I've actually played and enjoyed. I think because this is a bit more player driven and not "click your 30 spell rotations in sequence". By that I mean more D3 based. Neverwinter also allows you to actively dodge attacks by moving out of their attack path, highlighted by attack animations. The biggest issue with this system? Latency. Guardian Fighters use a sword and shield.... the shield can obviously be used to block. As this is real-time combat, you end up trying to pre-empt attacks to block rather then blocking when you see the attack animation. The effect is if you try and block when you see the attack happening, your shield will be up to block the "visual attack" but the damage has already been dealt. Watching people playing in the US gives an idea of how it should be (being able to block when you see the attack) and for this reason I REALLY hope there is more than one server.

Overall this is the type of combat system I enjoy, not the WoW, DnD, LotR types.

As for gameplay, I don't think too much can be done to differentiate itself, bar what would come with the IP. You have guilds, quest givers, different towns/cities, "raid" equivalents and things like the Foundry (player created missions) that are pretty standard. I do agree that the above titles feel more polished, and that is largely due to this title still testing in BETA! If this was the finished product, then sure, I'd have complaints, but I logged the bugs that I found and hope the game is better for it, come release.

This is one I'll definitely be playing.

I played a bit of this yesterday, I really enjoy it, who else is playing?

Sorry to necro the thread, but I just installed this last night..

Combat is so much better than WoW.. I love that it's not just about spamming a sequence of keys, every time you engage in battle.

Thanks, wanted to try this for a while, but with dota2 taking so much time, I never got around to trying this.

Was into dota for a while when I was at campus. Just lost interest after that. I don't think I would be able to play that unless I was on a LAN.

I'm also installing the Star Wars mmorpg at the moment... 25 gig download!
