Has anyone noticed an improvement in high ISO? I shot at 6400ISO the other night and really was impressed by the images, particularly in RAW.

I have also noticed this in RAW's, there also seems to be less banding at 6400 and 12800 with less visible noise in the shadows. I also think they have been tinkering with the RAW conversion in DPP as images shot prior to the firmware release also seem to have improved slightly when re-processed.

This looks cool. If it will allow me to add a joystick to the grip (like the 5D3's grip has), I might actually invest some time in this.

Now this is really interesting. There are very few things you can do to reduce noise in the firmware without resorting to some kind of image filtering (software noise reduction). If I had to guess, you could play with the gain setting of the analogue amplifier before the ADC, but then you would have to explain why they did not optimize this in the original firmware.

Of course, you could just apply some noise reduction before writing out the RAW image, especially if you have periodic noise at specific frequencies (which typically appears as banding in the image). This is generally frowned upon, since you could always do that in post, and RAW is supposed to be unprocessed.

I would love to hear what they did!

From what I understand Nikon, Pentax and Sony (all users of Sony's sensors) have been doing some NR to RAW already. Not sure what exactly though.

Something like banding, I don't mind the camera dealing with. To deal with banding in post means I have to export from Aperture/Lightroom to a larger format (typically TIFF or PSD) to a 3rd party program, then pull it back in if I want to keep things organised - hardly a nice way to work.

Yes, I know that many of the others are already doing some filtering, and I agree that this is fine if it makes the data easier to deal with --- but they should allow the user to turn the filtering off if you really want to.

Why? Realistically speaking people don't often zoom in to the pixel level to enjoy a photo. ;) I fired off a full resolution version to one of the agencies and they're happy with it so that's all the validation I need. :)

Most cameras look fine at that size. But it's a bit too small to make a comparison. Then again, we don't have anything to compare it to either, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

Anecdotal at best but I used to feel my 7D at 2500 was about the same as my 1D at 3200 and that was as comfortable as I was willing to take it. Now I don't know if it's the Aperture update, the firmware update, both, or something else entirely but something sure seems different to me.

I am confident that the Aperture update did not change anything in the raw processor for 7D files. It's one of the things I was hoping for, because it's not as good as it could be. I exported a few files before updating, and again after updating (having re-imported the RAW to force re-processing) - no difference.
 
So, after a quick look through the weekend's shoot, and I have the following impressions:

1. 6400 ISO does indeed look better. But only in some shots. Some not so much. All of it was in pretty atrocious lighting conditions, so that might just be down to the shot-to-shot differences. But the ones that look good definitely look cleaner than before.

2. AF: My keeper rate is definitely better than before, but it's still not consistent. Might need to do another round of MFA.
