Hi Guys

Ok, I have never looked at ADSL as an option, but now the company I work for have agreed to subsidise my connection should I choose to get one.

So basically, for someone who has never even bothered to look at ADSL options, I need some help in seeing what is out there. Speed would not be as much of a priority as amount of data, and a stable connection and good ISP would be top of the list too.

Also, I don't want to go back to my company with a couple thousand rand bill every month, I'm not one for taking the whole arm when the hand is trying to feed me :D

get a 384k line with a do BB package its the chepeast and lowest link of them all everything included in 1 bill

so you dont have ISP bill telkom bill etc etc

Nice company you work for there. :D

Don't worry you shouldnt find many ADSL packages in excess of R1000. Actually the average for most ISP on a 384k line is well below R300.
But really it depends on what your internet requirements are? I assume you will need it to work from home and possibly connect remotely. You probably wont need an uncapped a/c in that case but would probably need something faster than 384kbps.

Have a look around the forums though for ISP prices as there have been lots of price changes and specials recently.

Get a 512kbps uncapped unshaped from MWEB, i recommend this to anyone, purely for the fact that it is fast enough for browsing, and relatively ok for downloading small to large (10mb to 100mb) files in a shot space of time.

I have yet to experience any problems on my line (except when Telkom goes down) but other than that, there is nothing but bliss with them. On top of that, it is also relatively decently priced, doesn't cost to much for what you are getting.
I would not recommend the 384kbps line, do yourself a favour and read some of the forum threads that have been posted about that line. 90% of it... not good.

I would also recommend getting an 'unshaped' line as you are then garenteed not to get 'shaped' on any of your downloads, or download speeds will not decrease.

Just my 2 cents

As this bill will be submitted to his employer, I would rather advise NOT to get the line and do BB from Telkom, otherwise he might have to submit a lot of person info to his employer every month. (Unless you do not use the phone line for personal calls) Rather get an all-inclusive deal from say MWEB which cost R899/month for the 4mbps adsl line and the uncapped data. If the employer then pay for half, it will only cost you R450 and you would not mind how much data you spend for your employer. It is also a fixed amount every month.

The line would not be used for any calls no, purely as a connection to work from home.

The MWEB deal doesn't look like it includes line rental. How much is ADSL line rental and installation? I currently have no Telkom lines coming into my place.

Line rental included - shaped
384kbps = R349.00
512kbps = R599.00
4096kbps = R899.00

Line rental included - unshaped
384kbps = R629.00
512kbps = R999.00
4096kbps = R2359.00

Correct. The voice line rental from Telkom is R130 per month. I am not sure about installation charges, but it is most likely in the region of R500 for voice line as well as R500 for adsl. In this case I suggest you take the Telkom Simple offer, which cost R369 or something a month and include Voice line rental and 384kbps adsl and 1gb of data. What is nice about Telkom Simple is that there are no installation charges. Then you can always cancel that and move to another ISP if you want faster adsl or more data. ADSL speed upgrades are also free and is normally very quick.

I say take the 512 uncapped shaped package including line rental from mweb. Should be perfect for you.

Ok, I am thinking of taking the 512k Uncapped and Unshaped MWEB account. Company has agreed to cover installation costs, as well as full line rental and 50% of the data. So, I should only end up paying around R350 out of my own pocket?

You'll be able to rape your line to kingdom come. 150gigs a month will be normal...

Last questions. Is it possible to get this setup without having to sign my life away in years long contracts? I'd rather not be tied down just in case.

And what router is recommended?

Seeing as I don't have any Telkom lines, do I first need to apply for a normal voice line and wait for that to be installed and then apply for ADSL?
