Hi guys
I have just signed up with switched on - www.switchedon.co.za - I must say that I'm pretty impressed with the speed of the connection. It is a pay as you go service so it suits me.

Has anyone used these guys before? They seem to be part of Entelligence, who developed one of my websites sometime ago.

I agree with willemvdm, very high prices and will stay with Axxess.

Shaped and Unshaped. Plus lots of account types from Basic to Prepaid.

comparison in price

just compared axxess to switched on - the unshaped bandwidth is only R 6 / GIG cheaper with axxess...and after the first GIG the price difference is less than R 3 / GIG

GAMING
Wish you could spend hours online playing games with friends? Get switched | on and experience the freedom of high speed Internet access. We only bill you for the amount of traffic transferred each month at the low cost of R 25 / GIG (ex. VAT).
Our gaming package limits your traffic to South Africa only, but not the speed. This means that you will even be able to browse websites and Email friends in SA at the same low cost.

Besides the fixed Telkom cost for an ADSL line, switched | on will only bill you for the amount of traffic you transfer each month.

This is a freaking rippoff of note!

So for 10gig local only traffic you will be paying R 285.00!

What does "speed" have to do with your ISP?

speed has everything to do with the ISP and the quality of bandwidth they make available via the Telkom line. The extent that the bandwidth is contended (over sold) and quality managed affects the true speed, which is controlled by the ISP - since Telkom only gaurantee the speed of the line & not actual internet access.

You won't get faster/slower speeds regardless of which ISP you use.

The only difference comes in if ISP is re-selling SAIX or IS bandwidth.

Good sales strategy.....

I actually thought the same thing. I think I need to put a section onto the ISP thread I made regarding ISPs that are a total rip off, like M-Web and this specific offering for example, to warn people against giving their money away for nothing.

Currently my favorites (in no particular order) are

WebAfrica, OpenWeb, TelkomInternet and Cybersmart

Each in their own special way.

WebAfrica might be the only place for my personal needs, where I could get all I need for bandwidth. Due to my local only accounts, prepaid unshaped (gaming) and large amount of international usage. However the WebAfrica TelkomInternet combo works well for me. It ranges over 5 accounts from those two ISPs but it works :)

Whats the best for online gaming, specifically XBox Live! playing against other local guys? I might be getting an XBox360 soon..

WebAfrica 30GB Local Only is where I would point you to. A lot of people would shout and say OpenWeb, but Web Africa's system has just always impressed me a lot.

I don't know if X-Box needs some sort of international authentication or anything, but if its local, its IS Local Only.

WebAfrica Unshaped Prepaid if you using less than a gig per month for international play. else a TelkomInternet 4GB Unshaped if you using A LOT on gaming.

Other options are available if you know you gonna use 2GB per month every month for example.. then you can get a set 2GB per month unshaped account.
