Morning everyone

Hoping that someone can shed some light on my ADSL problems. Telkom installed a new line at my place yesterday and straight off the bat I was getting packet loss and high latencies. Tried Web Africa and Mweb, same problem.

Below is a tracert I did.

Below is ping test I did.

Let me know if there is anything else I can put up to help.

Thanks all :)

Hi gregmcc. I have the telkom line connected straight from the wall into my router. When I ping my router on 10.4.0.2 I get 1ms response.

Not sure what the rfc private address error is?

Could that be the issue perhaps? The first hop is not the IP address of my router.

Thanks. Any ideas who I contact to assist with that? Would I need to change settings on the router itself?

Could be bad line or exchange congestion. Post your router stats as well.

If your line is with Telkom you will have to log a call with them.

Alright, will post when I am home this afternoon.

Was hoping it was some router problem with the slow first hop, but it looks like congestion. Will contact Telkom.

Thanks all.

Create a PPPoE connection from your PC/Laptop, bridging the router and do another test. If it still looks like that, you sit with a Exchange congestion issue. Which area are you in?

Will try do that today. I'm in Zonnebloem, Cape Town. Have a friend in the same block of flats with a perfect connection.

Apparently I need to be changed to a different DSlam, hoping that helps.

Uhm you all seemed to have missed that the first hop IP is an internal IP, the second is hop an IP from the USA. Are you running a VPN on your router or on your PC? Your traffic seems to be routed via the states. 23.27.2.1 lives there according to a IP whois. Seeing as this is the case the latency you are seeing is pretty normal, actually rather good. You will also get bad speeds as you traverse multiple ISP's and network all with their own implemented shaping and congestion management.

Hi Stratt

That router was giving me wifi probs as well so I bought a new one. The first hop goes to the router at 1ms, the rest are all 300+. I assume congestion issues as during the day the results are all below 30ms.

Exchange congestion ...... bout covers it all.

From bad lines to dumb techies.

I get same at 2-00 am to 4.00am and its blamed on congestion .....

Cool, but the above traceroute has your internet traffic break out in the US. If you say the previous router was on 10.4.0.2 and your next hop is 10.254.104.1 and then the next hop after that is somewhere in the USA, and your traffic then routes back to SA then you cant blame your ISP or Telkom. Did/do you have a VPN connection set up that is currently proxying all your traffic via the USA? What does your traceroute look like with the 30ms latency as stated above, and then the one displaying 300ms and above?

The screenshots posted in the first post, does not display bad latency at all, 200ms to the USA is great. Physics is keeping you back at that point, regarding the speed of light through a optical medium.

Important thing to note is, first hop high latency is normally related to the Telkom network. If the latency is high upstream from that, then your ISP is most likely shaping you. Also, these tests will be of no relevance if you are downloading at the time of the test. The last result before the pic you attached shows a maximum of 9ms and average of 3ms, was this the local router? If yes either its a really horrible router that provides you with such high response times on LAN or it is currently busy, causing slow responses.

Nope, I certainly didn't set any VPN up. All I know is that the router was unused for about 6 months. I bought a new D-link and ran another tracert which gave me the following results.

That first hop is the IP of my router. Early mornings the other hops are all less than 30ms, but once 4-5pm hits it jumps to around 300-400ms.

Ah this looks more like congestion on Telkom's network. Maybe log your fault by phoning 10210 or online, and forward it to TelkomZA here on the forums to see what he can do (including the above screenshot). He has been very helpful so far with the queries I have forwarded to him.
