Hi there,

After a few months of pain Telkom finally activated my ADSL last night (4Mbps line) - which is awesome... I signed up with Afrihost on their gold/premium capped account and connected everything up all fine.

The issue is that the line is ridiculously slow - using speedtest it averaged between 0.42Mbps and 0.72Mbps on downloads, and generally close to 0.5Mbps on the upload side.

I know that certain things may cause an ADSL line to slow down, distance to the box/congestion etc - but is there any way to tell if this is simply the fastest my line is able to go (in which case I need to start crying and downgrade my line to 1024kbps) or whether this is something that can be sorted out by Telkom?

You guys have been awesome with all the help you've given me thus far!

Thanks,
Marc

Give us some line stats (SNR etc)...then we'll be able to help you know whats up.

Hi again,

Where/how do I get that info? From my router I can get the following (if relevant?)

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 Kbps 512 Kbps
Line Attenuation 7.6 dB 2.0 dB
Noise Margin 31.6 dB 28.0 dB

the line seems fine, those stats are quite good if you ask me. see if you can borrow a non-IS account from someone to test with

Hi all

Thanks so much for the help thus far!

I phoned telkom and asked them to do a port reset, and the connection is slightly better, with downloads running at a max of 1.2mbps - which still sucks???

I bought a gig of unshaped prepaid access from webafrica(no is?) and open web and both of them run slower than afrihost???

So what to do? The line stats indicate the line is adequate/good - and I've tried a non-IS and an IS backbone and the performance is still ****e - any other thoughts/ideas??

Thanks again guys!

bummer :( uhm, how's the computer connected to the router? if you're using wifi maybe the signal's weak. if wired the connectors could be corroded or even a break in the cable. also check if there's maintenance in your area at http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/forumdisplay.php/185-Telkom-SA-ADSL-Network-Notifications. if all is fine we can speculate DSLAM congestion in your area, and i have no idea how to get them to fix that

Frankly your line stats are impeccable. I'm sure you could easily get even 24mbps with a sync like that. Very rare so consider yourself fortunate in that regard! Your speed issues though, are due either to your ISP (account) , or a general upstream congestion problem at your exchange which would be Telkom's problem

Eish, okay - well guessing I'm not going to be able to get telkom to do much re any congestion etc their side :/

It's frustrating but not unbearable, so I guess I'm just gonna have to deal with it.

One more thing though - if it is a telkom congestion issue, why does my upstream speed hit 80 - 100% of it's max while d downstream lags so far behind?

Also, when I check my adsl availability on telkoms website the following is displayed:

On the new dsl10 checker:
"DSL availability and maximum speed supported by your exchange cannot be determined at this stage, please contact the DSL call centre on 10219"

On the old checker:

Adsl Support The exchange supports ADSL.

Your exchange supports ADSL.
Should you wish to register your details in order be contacted when the infrastructure issues are resolved, please click here.

I thought that was just a stuff up with the checker, is it perhaps saying "you can get adsl but things aren't 100% at the moment"?

Thanks again y'all!
