Im looking for a new adsl router with 300mb N and gigabit ethernet ports. Any suggestions? Currently looking at the Billion BiPAC 7800N 802.11n. Any advise would be appreciated...

Billion routers are pretty good. Just stay way from Netgear :)

The problem that I have with that router is that I only see Expansys selling them in SA and R1600 is just way too much for a router for home use!
The issue that I have with such expensive ADSL routers are that they are susceptible to lightening/electricity spikes and if they get damaged you'll have to replace it which is a very costly and unnecessary expense.

I'd suggest that you rather just buy a D-Link DSL-2500U (ASDL modem) from Sybaritic for R200 and a TP-Link WR1043ND (802.11n + 5x 1Gbps LAN + USB;ask them to install DD-WRT firmware for extra R50) from Uniterm Direct for like R589 (ex VAT and excl shipping).
If you already have an ADSL2+ modem, then you don't need to buy the D-Link modem.
There are probably a few other Gigabit Ethernet routers available, but I quite like that TP-Link one since you can install DD-WRT firmware on it, which makes it a very "powerful"/configurable router.

Personally I prefer a cheap WiFi + ADSL router ~ R400 connected to an old box turned into a linux router with one g card, one n card, and a PCI 4 port gigabit switch. Set up in a certain way, this physically isolates my network from my DSL line (yes.. i lost an expensive router like the one you are looking at when lighting struck once. )... provides a 300mbit hotspot with the N card, and ethernet from the switch going over home plugs throughout the house. exact control over bandwidth, and who uses and sees what. In this way squid cuts off internet to the kids @ 0900, and limits their bandwidth when im streaming Hulu.

Yup stricken. Using a separate and cheap ADSL modem is the way to go.

I quite like those very low power PC's (like with Intel Atom processors) with Squid proxy servers :D What OS are you using for the routing & firewalling?

Thanks for the replies. I cant use a pc seeing as i have to keep it mom and dad friendly for when i move out. A pc can get a bit complicated. I think the seperate modem and ap could be the best option. Just a q Pada, with dd-wrt can i use the extra usb slot on the tp-link for a printer instead of storage drive?

I'm not sure if you can attach a printer to it. You can always look/ask on the DD-WRT forums and report back to us :)

@Pada why the "stay away from Netgear"?

is it to do with overall performance, or general functionality?

I am asking cause I wanted to do a price summary on components if I wanted to upgrade my home network with gigabit routers and had my eye on the WNDR3700 and the DGND3700 from Netgear.

Off-The-Chart:
I say it because they don't support bridge/half-bridge mode and the ADSL modems have poor SNR margins compared to other brands.

You might be able to find a Netgear router that does support bridge/half-bridge mode.

which Billions would you recommend for: gigabit and ADSL modem?

I prefer to go with the single unit instead of separate modem since the area they are placed has a few "obstacles" which tend to become a problem at stages.
so less = better (also just a bit more convenient)

I could possibly also go for just a router as we recently had a VOX system installed which has it's own ADSL+router although it has very little customizing such as port port forwarding and some others (still have to fiddle)

my bad, see you were talking about D-Link's

ag I think I will just stick with those 2 as the 2 I am currently using don't bother me that much in regards to the SNR.

Hey ,

The Billion B-7402NX has gigabit ports and wireless N and then the 7404 VNOX also has these features.

:D
