Please note that our Uncapped ADSL terms of service
and the way we manage these packages will be changing
from the 1st of July.

Our uncapped accounts will be managed each day on an
hourly basis depending on the capacity available on our
network at that time.

Why are we making this change?

We have a certain capacity available on our ADSL network
for all of our Capped and Uncapped ADSL clients - If the
network is congested and slow at any time we will dynamically
manage our biggest uncapped users to ensure the best
experience for all clients across our network.

How will we do this?

We monitor our overall network usage on an hour to hour basis
and if our capacity is stretched we will dynamically shape and
throttle certain clients' uncapped accounts to relieve congestion.
These uncapped clients will be chosen based on their historic
bandwidth usage.

Who will this affect?

Based on our usage patterns over the last few months we have
calculated that this will affect 7% of our client base.

Uncapped users who have used the most bandwidth will start to
be throttled first if there is network congestion.

Capped accounts will never be throttled and will always be
unshaped and unthrottled.

If I am one of the top 7% will I always be throttled?

This depends on the usage of our network during any given
hour - We evaluate our capacity each hour and if capacity
opens up we will unthrottle uncapped users who may have
been throttled until such a time that the capacity is maxed
out again.

What if I am one of the 7% affected and I'm not happy?

If you need to get full speed consistently no matter your
usage then your best bet is to convert to a Capped ADSL
package that best suits your needs. You can instantly
change your package by logging into your Client Zone.

We understand that this may not be ideal for you and if you
are unhappy with your service then you can cancel your
account at any time of the month before the 25th and your
account will be cancelled from the 1st of the next month.

Will this affect me if I am on a capped account?

No - Your capped account will always be unshaped and
unthrottled. We will always give you as much speed as
your line and our network allows.

The reality is that currently 7% of our clients have the potential
to negatively affect the service of the other 93% of our clients.

We need to change our terms so that we can manage this as
well and as fairly as possible - It is our goal to ensure the best
possible experience for both the biggest and smallest of our
clients given the parameters we have.

Maybe better than their previous policy.

We will have to wait and see how it pans out in practice.

But one thing is for sure, i like Gian and i'm sure he will always strive to give the best service possible. I honestly think he has the best intentions. The current problems are entirely related to the extremely high telkom ipc costs.

Yeah I'm cancelling. If by I'm at 70GB and I-can't-even-browse-internet im cancelling for sure

Should read like this:

If you are one of the heavy downloaders, you are welcome to switch to our capped account and start paying us lots more money for the privilege. We understand that you may not be happy about this, so piss off if you don't like it. Hakuna Matata have a good day!

Well done Afrihost for sticking one to the abusers of uncapped and trying to claw back some reputation with the rest of your client base. No I am not a subscriber but kudos to you for trying to be fair to everyone.

will you get a notice that you're about to be throttled?

What a croc of s h i t. I was one of the 7%, as they already introduced this last week Friday. I averaged 120gig a month. Chances of anyone getting to 100gig every month are gonna be very difficult. As for notification, there was none. FFS, why dont they just say its a 100gig capped account with shaping and leave it at that! BTW, I have not been able to use my Uncapped account at all in the last 7 days (I hit 70 gig in 10 days). That you can follow by my posts in the "Afrihost Feedback" thread. You will note that I was told about this new feature, and few believed me!!!!

Edit: I thought that 120 gig per month was reasonable, given what one can actually acheive on a 4mb line....

I am not paying for something advertised as uncapped only to be punished in doing so. But these debates have been done. So I guess its just one less account for them.

when they say that the 7% is based on download history, does this only take the current month into account, or your entire download history

If you look at your usage online in the clientzone, it shows your previous month as well, so presume it will look at least at the previous months totals, maybe more???

I have had a good week ... NOT

Haha the entire afrihost userbase has the following reply to that:
Bye.

1 Less abuser to subsidise

You know what, at least afrihost is being honest and upfront about what they're doing...

I don't see mweb or other uncapped service providers going into any detail about their shaping. A friend of mine has mweb uncapped and i tried out his account for a while and found it awful.
Now i'm not saying afrihost is perfect, that's unrealistic, but once again at least they're being honest...

And if you think about it, this new policy is much better than the old one, because now your line doesn't get slowed down for the rest of the month when you reach a certain limit -
now you just get occasionally throttled for an hour or so? To be honest, for only 500 bucks, being able to download as much as you want and having your line speed drop every now and then is a good deal as far as i'm concerned.

Everyone knows even on capped accounts, where certain protocols are shaped and due to line quality etc you never really get your full theoretical line speed anyway...

Let's face it, you get what you pay for and any way you look at it R500 for uncapped is a good deal... 3 months ago we were still paying R30 a gig at cheapest - work that out on 70gb usage and you get R2100.

one more question- this should probably go to customer support, but maybe someone here knows- is this also proportional to the type of account you have, ie obviously 4mb/s clients will pull more bandwidth than 384kb/s clients, even though the former may only download 20% of the time, where the latter may download 24/7.

Cancelled - Afrihost should NOT have tried to compete with MWEB and others, when they KNEW they could not.

Just out of interest, what are downloading to use an average of 120GB a month?
oh wait.. let me guess... linux iso's....?

Lololololol ... slow down for an hour or so ... hahahaha, try for a week now!

@Murmaider ... anything I want to... thanx for asking

LOL, well i have done 19Gb for the month so far. think i will go back to a capped 20 account. Will prolly be cheaper anyway.

I dont like these new T&C, simply because you have no measuring stick. you dont know what they feel is excessive use- I think it would be far better if they kept the old way of doing things, where you are throttled after x amount of gigs, and then lift THAT throttling during times of low usage. But hey thats just me.

This system seems a hell of a lot better, you only get throttled during congested periods. Who the hell watches their downloads anyway, I don't mind getting throttled as long as I get a decent throughput on average and the service isn't cut off.

For those who are unhappy about this perhaps you should consider a business class uncapped account if you want 24/7 guaranteed throughput.
