Amazon has launched a new entry-level Kindle, which is thinner and lighter than its predecessor and has twice the memory.

I'd recommend getting one with a backlight if you can. Like the PaperWhite. It does cost more though.

The selling point for me was the battery life of the original Kindle ... lasts for weeks with regular reading.

Twice the memory isn't really a selling point for me - my old 2nd gen kindle holds more than I could ever read and I've never even come close to needing all the memory at once. Bought books are also always availble for download anyway.

The paperwhite with it's backlight - you're right, it's the one thing I wish I had on my kindle. There are times I'd like to lie outside or something and read without having to switch lights on. That said - the $49 deal on the normal kindle the past few days is/was still a great deal. If you enjoy reading - get a kindle (or any decent e-book).

Maybe you wouldn't but I've got plenty of other devices I can use at night, I'm really only looking for something I can use reasonably well outdoors in bright sunlight.

I wouldn't save on this.

How often do you need to read without a light source? You fly a lot so sure on planes it's maybe a bit better but for most people that read books everywhere a regular kindle is fine.

Every night. Easier to switch on the backlight of my Kobo Glo then to switch on a light.

AFAIK the kindle will sync with the kindle app on my Fire so I can always continue my reading on that if switching on a lamp becomes too complicated.

Well its personal preference I guess but I try to stay away from LCD based screens at night. Unsuccessfully I might add..

My comment was meant more in general though - these devices don't really get outdated as fast as other tech so makes sense to spend a bit more especially if you read a lot.

As per above was a more general comment but yeah if its a choice between good book & paperwhite then obv the good books.

Nope - has no inherent light source so to speak (depending on what you buy)

Considerably less harsh than a LCD screen...

Has to do with the refresh rate of the e-Ink screen rather than the backlight.

And the 'refresh rate' is only per page-turn (basically there is no refresh rate).
