Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira expects to be named the new Bafana Bafana coach - with the only snag being his starting date.

Parreira told Brazilian newspaper Estado de São Paulo on Thursday that while his contract still had to be finalised "serious negotiations have been going on for some time".

The South African Football Association (Safa) is said to be keen for Parreira to start on August 1.

Parreira led Brazil to the World Cup title in 1994 but bombed out in the quarterfinals this year, leading to his resignation on Wednesday.

The respected Brazilian turned down the Bafana job six years ago. This time around, a monthly salary of more than R1-million, and the prospect of coaching in another World Cup in 2010, appealed to him.

sounds promising :)

Apart from winning it with Brazil his teams have never got out of their group.

I would prefer two South African ex-pros who know what they are talking about, know South African football and players and can really make a difference.

Like Steve Khompela whoc coaches the youth team as it is, and perhaps a Radebe or a Fish or something along those lines...

oh god, i hope the players don't complain again about language like i remember they did once.

this just makes me angry

SAFA are already a debt-ridden organisation yet they can afford to pay this coach a ludicrious amount of money for such a cr@p team. No wonder they quit after 1 year as they get the rest of their contract paid out.

Was hoping for a local coach, Parreira failed with a star-studded Brazil in addition to his astronomical wages and I don't think he's right for us. I hope he succeeds though if he gets the job.

not to derail fromt he topic,
Of the two other sporting codes, cricket and soccer, how are the coaches paid?
Mickey Arthur
Jake White

Native the only info I can find on Jake White and mention of his contract

By failing to offer White a contract beyond 2007, SA Rugby could be forcing White out of the Springbok job, despite a win percentage of around 70 percent and a complete turnaround in Bok fortunes.

England is ready to step in and buy him out of his existing deal at a cost of around £100 000 (about R1,3-million). If White does move abroad, word is that Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer and SA Under-21 coach Pieter de Villiers would be favourites to succeed him.

However, while it has been procrastinating, England has been quick to signal its interest with a job that is worth a minimum of R20-million over four years – nearly four times his current package.

No matter how hard they try, they just never seem to get it right..

I might be wrong here, but the SA soccer team did a lot better with clice barker as coach than any other big moola coach that came after him. Maybe they should bring him in as an assistant coach or something. Or any other local coach that actually knows the players

They are highly paid, but not close to a million a month. The main difference of course is that SAFA receives money from the government and the two other codes do not.
Our tax money goes towards paying for a football coach who'll be replaced with Jomo Sono just before the World Cup

i know corne krige used to be paid in excess of a million a year whilst he was still captian, so the coach must get more than that... maybe 1.5 - 2mil a year?
no idea about the cricket dudes, will be interesting to know tho if anyone has figures?
