I'm thinking of getting a new TV. In a way it seems silly, because I don't watch much tv, but my tv is old and small and maybe that's why I don't watch much tv :)

So I'm looking at suggestions of what to get. I saw the Samsung 40" Smart TV on takealot for about R5500 - I wouldn't want to spend more, or go bigger, than that.

What I want in a tv isn't much - I'm not so worried about awesome sound or picture quailty, I'm sure the standard these days is good enough. I do need:
  • to be able to plug in a usb flashdrive or hdd
  • And I'd like - somehow, maybe - to stream stuff from the net
I know the Samsung TV has their SmartHub and Apps, supports netflix, and has a wifi connection built in, but I think local services like showmax aren't supported yet? So it is really worth my while, in SA, looking at a Samsung Smart tv as opposed to any other brand/model that takes usb input, and then pairing it with something like Roku or Chromecast or a media server of some sort?

I don't need to get as complicated as lot of guys here with Unotelly and Netflix and all that, the local services that are starting to come out are enough for me :)

If you dont need all the thrills then the Samsung as a stock device will be enough for you.
The Roku and Chromecast plugs in at your HDMI port any way so your good to go.

If that's not a major issue how going bigger. 40" is like a PC monitor.

You can get a hisense 47" for the same price with all bells and whistles and the picture quality will be decent. Sinotec also has units and comes with a 5 year warranty.

Cool, looks like that will work then.

The only problem with going bigger is having enough space to put it - I'll have to get out the measuring tape and see how big the 40" actually is :)

He doesn't frequent thisv place now that plasma is obsolete

40" is rather small. The Hisense mentioned earlier is very much on point and looks like the main contender to LG and Samsung, lately.

You get my PM though?
