EDIT: content replaced completely

The Black USB modem does work with utTraceStar.

There are certain common problems people have with using it it seems

1. The ip wizard in utTraceStar ... Do not click yes this seems to not work (unfortunately) rather set the ip manually.

2. Setting the ip manually Please do not set the ip on the wrong connection!
the connection usually is Local Area Connection 2 and on the far right or underneath it will say iBurst terminal

3. Firewalls either you must disable your firewall or allow a rule for the ip range 192.168.250.1 to 192.168.250.10. This can be done in the firewall options or configuration under firewall setting level (custom or options).
You will also have to enable access for utTraceStar under program control or internet applications.

4. Sometimes the modem is just sending out uplink fail messages utTraceStar ignors these and you may have to wait a long time for the anything to display.
This happens when you connection is extremely bad.

5. Unplugging the power to the modem after setting the ip address might resolve other problems.

I'm willing to try... Thats if you dont forget about this post... :)

It appears that some new black modems have been blocked and some have not been blocked. Thx Ed great job! Avoid the confusion drop the bomb.

I'm sure the the older white modems work better than the new black 1's cause my friend just got iburst with the new black modem and came over so i could help set it up for him. Our computers were next to each other and I have a white modem, I'm sitting there with full signal and yet he only has 80%...

Maby they have simply been given a different scale for working out the signal percentage according to iBurst app. Which would be a great idea anyway, we all know what 100% on the other ones meant.

But of course, it could just be that they rae worse, but that would be very strange, and they look so cool!

single user black modem

I went to the Ut... website to download the program. It said it needed the .Net software from MS. So I downloaded it, even though I'm not on a network, but a single user connecting with the new black USB modem.

I then downloaded the software to my laptop and then tried to run it from there. It doesn't seem to work? All the fields on the screen were empty and I was not able to input anything into it. What did I do wrong? I thought it would prompt one to input certain fields.

Is Ut... only for use by techies? As far as I know, the IP address refers to your computer's unique address. However, I don't know what mine is, or where to get it?

By the way, I have read all the Newbie and Ut... threads, but most of it is too technical for me.

You shouldnt input anything into UTts, it simply displays your connection info to you.

The IP address can be changed by you. You go to network settings, then right click the network connection which says iBurst Terminal in grey underneath it (if you still use USB for your latop) go to properties. then click TCP/IP in the little list which comes up and click Properties button just underneath the list.
Here you can change your IP. Set it to 192.168.250.1

Now UTts should work if it can at all.

It is working!! Thanks. Last stupid question: How do one get a report? I clicked the HTML button, but where do I go to find the report?

The html is in the directory you ran utTraceStar from.

Please can you give me the modem number or an writing on the modem.

Black modems not so bad...

I don't know about the new Black modems not working. Mine has worked flawlessly. Sure, the speeds are seldom more than about 350kb/s, but my tower is almost always on a load of 3 (Centurion) and my signal is usually around 88dB, so that doesn't really concern me.

And uttracestar worked immediately once I figured out which interface to set the IP for.

However: Every now and then I start uttracestar, and it complains that it can't find the modem (gives the "Do you want to run the wizard" dialogue). I'll try a few things with no luck, then simply give up. When I try again the following day without changing a thing, it works again.

Very strange this means the request to the modem timed out, thus the modem is not responding correctly. What are the few things you try?
Do you try restart your pc or unplug the modem?

Things I try... Rebooting the PC, resetting the modem, changing IP address, restarting uttracestar. I don't remember precisely all the steps I've tried before, or which order, but I'll be sure to record it all the next time it happens.

Sweet thanks for the UTID, im so gonna use that to hack into your account and steal all of your bandwidth hahaha...hahaha.

Nothing.. I know you cant do that. But maby he doesnt and he'll get freaked that people can use his UTD ID to get into his account. nevermind though..

I'm sure if you got through to a dumb enough helpdesk operator (any of them) you could get them to assign that UTD to your account after a while and make his refuse to work with his account anymore.

Yes you most probably can ;)

Oh, I see. Well it was there when I first posted that.

haha, it must have actually freaked him out and he delete the post? Im telling you he gave out the UTD ID and Serial numbers and stuff after you asked.

Oops, now you didnt get to it. me bad.. didn't think he'd believe me, maby I should start using those simleys.
