New Build -i7 system (Please check)

I have 64X Win 7 RC if you in CT .. you can come pick it up free!
dont get Vista now... rather use 7 RC then buy win 7 when its out!
+ the 4850 will be much better for your rig.. the 460W will do just fine.

Nice rig BTW

Charles , where are you located , if in jhb pm djngoma he'll sort you out for a win 7 disk

I thing the i7 cpu is overkill and would rather invest in Raptor drives and a good backup solution.

Thanks for the feedback, but after doing extensive research on this related to LR2 and CS4 specifically, the i7 chip could shave off hours of waiting time per week - that just seals the deal for me.

Nah...afaik the 1TB sammies perform VERY well compared to the raptors if not better:)

And the idea for using win7 RC instead of vista seems like a good idea to me. Also don't know whether we will be getting the option to upgrade from vista to win 7 here in SA.

@OP : the money you save on buying vista now could be very well spent on a better PSU and the 4850 which is marginally more expensive than the card you mentioned.

Win 7 RC sounds like a great idea. Will try and track down a copy here in JHB. As for the upgrade, I spoke to Microsoft SA last week and they advised that any purchase of Vista DSP made after 26 June 2009 will automatically qualify for a free upgrade to Win 7.

i think you should go with a 4850..no use buying an i7 rig & not getting a good gpu! also get win 7 RC..its awesome..will save you R1500! get a branded 500w PSU just to be safe in case you want to OC! i currently have an i7 rig..it overclocks so easily..which is awesome..im getting 3.4GHz @ 1.024v with stock intel cooler..temps max out with prime 95 running for an hour to 59-62'C! which is not 1 bit bad!

*edit*
when buying the cpu make sure its the D0 stepping!

I will try and stretch the budget to accommodate the 4850 - many of you have said the same thing and it is clear that I must look at it carefully. Thanks for the feedback!

How will I know it is a D0 stepping? What does it mean? Are not all i7 920's the same?

HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E DUAL DVI-I / TVO LITE R 1,049 excl. R 1,195 incl.

Keeper, where did you find that card at that price? I cannot seem to find one less than R1350.00??

Thanks a mil everyone - my first experience with participating on MyBB and it has been a pleasure. Your feedback is very much appreciated!

Ok thought this was only applicable for laptops...

In all probability its just the lastest release of the chip which has a greater OCing potential

Thanks Zenbaas and Stickfigure.

@ Zenbaas - yeah, I also originally thought so. I spoke to a chap called Jermaine Lazarus @ MS and he confirmed that as long as it is a OEM or DSP license, and it was purchased "AFTER" 26 June 09, then Win 7 will be yours for free when it is released. And he confirmed this for a new DIY build PC such in my case.

As for a PSU, I read some reviews on Huntkey and the company has a very bad reputation. Testers say that they are out by at least 100watts on each of their advertised units. Many units even explode when they make the unit run at the max stated wattage. I really need to pinch the pennies - so what PSU that delivers 500w for Under R550.00 can you recommend - Please? Kindly mention the online store as well.

Many thanks guys.

Darn - it is a bit more, but will this do?

Gigabyte Odin 585 - R626.00 from Sybaritic

Short Description: GIGABYTE® ODIN 585W 24-Pin Power Supply, 4 Molex & 5 SATA Power Connectors, Intel LGA775 Ready & Approved, Includes Power Cable

Although it says LGA775 ready, will it work with a x58 m/board?

Should do.

Thing you have to remember is it's fine if your setup can run off a decent 450-500w psu but as you said, good luck finding one that has the necessary sata and 6pin power cables you need.

If you were running a 4870 you'd have a bit of a problem as it requires 2 6pin connectors and not 1.

That power supply only supplies around 500watts continuous but should be fine.

Check Thermaltake range from Corex. The modular units should have enough connections for your needs. Also you get the multi SATA power adaptors where more than two drives can be powered of one power feed or molex connector.

Thanks PostmanPot - just checked it now....it says it only has 2x sata power connectors - I need 4-5x. Am I missing something (apart from 2x/3x sata connectors:p) I need it for the two system SATA drives, the one internal 1TB drive, the DVD Writer and a 5th should I want to install a 4th internal drive at a later date?

This PSU situation seems silly as I got my Gigabyte Superb 550 (450W) for R501 around the same time last year, with exactly what you are looking for but they seem to have been removed from the country with no reasons given.
Cheapest with what you want was this http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=73_269&products_id=19261 .

You may want to check out the omega 600w psu. I haveone in one of my setups and it's never given me any problems. It has modular connections and AFAIK it has all the necessary requirements for your system, when I got mine it was about R650-700, @ prophecy. should be the same now, maybe less.
Good luck!

Thanks again guys. With such friendly help I think I should participate on MyBB a bit more often.

@ Kaaskop - good to know! I really am on a tight budget but want to go for a i7 system. Looks like I may just make it!
