Guys

I would like your thoughts on the ffg hardware that I intend purchasing soon:

1. Canon Powershot S5 IS this one ... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/495623-REG/Canon_2077B001_Powershot_S5_IS_Digital.html

2. SONY DCR-SR200 HDD VIDEO CAMERA this one http://www.catsdigital.co.za/item.php?i_id=71

Can I do better? Gonna buy in Singapore.

I am a point and shoot person.
Don't edit video except clipping unwanted stuff.

Thanks in advance.

PS. I will be selling my old stuff pretty cheap so watch the classifieds (prophecy).

You should ask telkomisaloser about the S5 - I believe he uses one - and judging by some of his pics - with good results.

The only Point and Shoot I would even consider getting for myself is the Canon G9.

EDIT - as for video . . . I know nothing :D

@bwana - I use ulead 11 for basic editing and for me it is so simple to use. You should give it a try sometime - it is my hobby recently to make home video of my old minidv tapes.

The only thing I have against the G9 is the sheer size and weight of the camera.

If you're looking for a more compact PS without sacrificing IQ too much, then I'd recommend the Canon IXUS 960 IS.
My work colleague has the earlier version 850 IS - it has optical image stabilisation and high ISO - I was really impressed with this compact PS.

I have the Sony miniDV (HC43) and would probably go for miniDV again, because after editing with Ulead10 and burning to DVD, I store the original miniDV tapes. The tapes are really cheap.
I don't know much about the DVD and HDD camcorders but one concern is that they may lose some quality in compression, whereas the miniDV is raw AVI.

When I've purchased pricey electronics abroad I get a fake low receipt (< R3000) to show at JNB.

I have iMovie 08, iMovie HD, and Final Cut Express - so software isnt the problem - a desire to do video is. That said I'm looking at getting a Flip just for the usual awh-arent-the-kids-cute moments 0 I'm sure the overseas GPs would appreciate it.

RE the G9 - It's big but nowhere near as big as the S5

then I must have my bearings crossed. Cos the last time I checked the G9 looked bigger than the S5.

Does anyone have the H7 (or 9 I think --- anyway the big brother of the H3) - I hear that image noise is an issue with this camera.

Time is ereally getting short - I need to make a decision pretty soon.

I've got a Canon SX100IS. Very nice and not that expensive at all.

HDD and DVD camcorder recording quality is lower than miniDV. Stick to miniDV. Also, if your HDD is full you have to download everything to your PC/MAC first where with miniDV you just pop in another tape.

Have a look at the Sony HC38, HC48.
