So my car was stolen outside of my house 2 weeks ago (in broad daylight), and now I need a replacement :(. My car was inherited so I have very little insight on shopping for a 2nd hand car. I need something that is safe, reliable, easy to repair (with regards to obtaining parts in ZA), not prone to theft and that will resell well. I've been told to avoid French/Italian cars and the general consensus is to get a Polo/Yaris.

My budget is about R90 000, I've seen 2001-2003 Audi A4s and BMW 3 series in that range but I'm guessing the mileage (~150 000km) and general price of these brands is going to make repairs expensive, and the age of these cars is going to make them hard to resell. To good to be true?

Any suggestions on particular models? BTW, I'm 23 and live in the Western Cape, if that helps with suggestions of cars or places to look.

Western cape is great, so ignore EVERYBODY who tells you that a Polo is a hijack risk...they aren't!

Personally I would ignore the bigger cars such as BMW and Audi, because at that price they will be out of service plan, and no matter how nice they are, they are expensive to service and maintain properly.

you should be able to pick up a decent polo Classic for that price, and even if the service plan is over, it won't cost an arm and a leg to service.

Of course you have chosen the one forum that can be violently anti VW and anti Polo, so sit back and wait to be bombarded with all the reasons as to why you shouldn't buy one...:(

I am on my 5th Polo at the moment and they have ALL been superb. I am also currently renting a 1.6 Classic to do trips into deep rural areas in KZN and the Eastern Cape and this week did 2600 km on roads that were really only fit for 4wheel drive and my Polo hasn't missed a beat...also not a single rattle or squeak after hundreds of kilometres of really bone jarring back roads. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!:D

Like Fazda said, the Polo is a great little car. You can get a 2006 model with relatively low kilometers for that price. If you want a 1.6, get the Comfortline.

Thanks for the input guys! How little would "low kilometers" generally be?

About 60 000km if you're looking at a 2006 model. You might get lucky and find one with even less.

gonna sound like a broken record ... ditto to Fazda ... the BMW's and Audis's are not an issue as long as you have the $$$ to maintain ... or if you have the right 'contacts' in the industry then you can get away maintaining them for cheap ... id suggest a polo 1.4 ... had one and its a lovely car ... the toyotas are also very good .... but i prefer the all round drive of the polo, much more comfortable than the toyota ....

btw i sold my 1.4 2008 for R90k ... i think i sold it too cheap in the end ... 60000km ... but has the comfortline options ...

You can't go wrong with the new BMW M3. Your R90,000 should make a nice deposit on it.
:D:p:)

Lol, at least I can make a quick getaway from the debt collectors in it ;P
