I am thinking of buying a new VW Polo 2.0 Highline, list price R199200.00 + R830 for metallic paint - Total R200030.00 cash. I have an appointment with a dealer tomorrow morning, what would be a reasonable discount I can bargain for, I am thinking in the region of 10%, any comments ??

R200k for a polo ? ? O_O

Well, start out as low as possible, maybe like R30k off... then if he says no you can just go a little higher. Salesmen (especially new cars) are desperate to make a sale so im sure you could get quite a bit off.

Secondhand car? For that price you can get some very nice cars secondhand, especially now.

Play the dealers against eachother.
Ask for freebies.
They can give upto R20 000 discount exclud VAT.
Make sure you know your stuff, if you dont want cruise control dont let them sell it to you. Make sure you know what you want before you go in.

My opinion go for the dealer that throws in leather and sunroof for R199k, they can do it!!!

You dont want to wait for the new spec?

Seriously: that is too much for that car - people need their heads read.
...BTW: that car has a biscuit wheel for spare ;) :D

You can get a low mileage Golf V 2.0 FSI or TDi for less than R200k.

No, don't want the new spec, it's just that, the 2.0l motor I am after and BTW, no its got a full size spare. Look what happened with the "new spec" Golf prices, a little 1.4l motor, yes engine of the year but how long is that turbo's going to last in the light of the turbo recall on the diesel Polo's.

Lol please dont listen to them.
Test drive that 1.4TSI, if you can afford it, get it. VW gives you a 3 year warranty so you safe. My turbo is fine, maybe im one of the lucky few, and im not kind to her lol...

This 1.4 has been in production overseas for a while now, and no complaints.
Dont buy the 2.0l just because of the turbo issues.

My personal opinion is it is overpriced now, I got a Polo Gti brand new at 190k with extras a year ago.
But try and get the dealers to give you the best price that YOU want not that they want to give you.
If it was my wallet, R190 with sunroof, leather, metallic paint, boot strip and licensing!

Don't worry about the turbos on the 1.4, they have been tested ad infinitum. The turbo recall on the diesels was no big deal, and didn't cost the owners a cent anyway.

I LOVE Polos with a passion, but to pay 200k for one is plain bloody madness and falling into the trap set for you by VWSA!!

If they go "by the book" they cannot give you more than 10% on a new one, but if you are clever, you will talk them into selling you a demo with all the bells and whistles for a great deal less than 200 less 10%.

That is how I bought my last Polo, two days after it had been registered, and with 130 k's on the clock, I ended up paying the equivalent of a new one less 17% and they were still laughing, so don't let them give you any bleeding heart stories!

To be honest I don't think that car manufacturers were being stupid in hiking their prices amid the economic downturn.

When things stabilise and people can afford credit again, there'd be no need for them to drop prices. That's when they'll milk it, provided they can see off the current rough patch.

Remember that when prices go up, they very rarely come down partly because of the effect it may have on the vehicle's trade value. The best you can hope for is a new model line at the same price of the outgoing model.

Thanks for all the comments so far, I am afraid to say, but no turbo for me thanks, overseas are totally different conditions than SA. I have in my mind to try and negotiate for less 10% everything included. With respect to buying second hand, I did consider, and still is considering that but then it must be not more than 1 year old with less than 20k on the clock and the colour I want, and those seems to be few and far between, even had a look at Autotrader. Mastercars lists a couple, but with high mileages, as well as "new" ones in excess of 200k. We shall see what happens....

I told you to watch out for the cruise control BS they tend to give...
If you really want a better deal, print the quote they gave and take it to another dealer tell them to better it!;)

like the others have said, tell them what you want..let them fight it out.
I got my 2006 1.9tdi Sportline with leather , bluetooth carkit and towbar+ licensing for less than show room price. play a few dealers against each other, dont be shy. simply tell them, it's easy, who ever will give me the best deal gets my business.
200k......wow my buddy bought a 2.0l 4 years ago.....for R150k........gone up 33% since then...shocking....
