So I'm 25 and have been driving a 2003 Opel Corsa 1.6 since I started driving. It's done well, but I'm tired of it and it is slowly starting to cost me a fortune.

I'm looking to buy a new car and would desperately like some opinions. The cars I'm interested in are:
  • VW Polo 1.4 Trendline
  • Kia Rio 1.4 Tec Man

So the price range is about 150k-190k. Am I missing any that I should be considering? What would you get in my position?

Check your insurance premiums first on all the models. I did that and was rather surprised with the results and it influenced my end purchase a lot.

Definitely the Rio. No contest. Much better warranty, service plan, looks better and insurance will be cheaper.

If you're not set on a hatch also have a look at the new Honda Ballade. It's what I ended up with after being in your position as well.

why you wanna buy new?

I'm definitely set on a hatch. And I'd be happy to settle for a demo model if I can - not too sure that I'd be happy with a second hand. Also haven't found a deal that's any good.

The problem with finding a deal is that both of those cars are quite popular. Usually deals you get on outgoing models. The Kia Cerato for example has some good deals now because the new one is due this year. Maybe look at that.

Yup avoid the Polo, overpriced, underspec by comparison and the insurance will certainly be more. However, if you enjoy the company of hijackers then go for the Polo. (not my opinion, but that of the owner of a security company in my area - he moaned at someone the other day for buying it, said they needed their head read)

Kia Rio or Hyundai i20

Oddly enough Kia & Hyundai match up on a lot of options .. even the Sportage vs the iX35.

VW's days of screwing the customers is over. The much loved vivo's are nothing but Polo bodies with citi golf interiors. Pass.

For around R190k you could possibly get the top of the range new Yaris 3 door with the moonroof

More power than both the Polo 1.4 and same as the Kia.

Kia Rio is awesome though.

i bought a Rio 1.4man in january and it's an awesome car, if it came in a 1.6 it would've been even better....

Out of those two...Rio for sure.

EDIT: if you were willing to look at second hand, for 190k you can buy ver low mileage 2011 Kia Cerato/Koups with 4 years left on the warranty/service plan.

Rio all the way. The tsotsis love VW too much!! And the Rio is way better looking

Between those too definitely the Rio.

You should also look at the Hyundai i20 (best bang for your buck) and also give the new Corsa Essentia a chance. I stepped from a Corsa Lite (mk2) into a new Corsa Essentia (mk4) and they are worlds apart. The service plan is also very welcome
