So I bought a new car a few weeks back (paid cash)
When i received the registration papers, the vehicle was listed as Used.
Called the salesman, and he says they bought the vehicles and registered them in the dealership's name to get a bigger discount - hence why the vehicle is shown as used.

Is this something I should be worried about? i.e. will it affect me when I try to sell?

FWIW, the car came with about 70kms on the odo.

Its not a new car if it has a registered owner before you if I'm not mistaken, however others know more about this than I do

That's what is worrying me slightly - at no point was this mentioned (that the vehicle was registered before)
Even the invoice listed the vehicle as new.

Something dodgy with that deal. If you bought it as new then it shoudn't have been registered before. Since its not new you should be getting a good deal on it. Demand a massive discount.

What you bought was a Demo effectively.

If you bought it New, and paid the New price I would be asking for a discount on that as well and money returned to you.

I don't think it is something to worry about.
Almost all dealers "Pre-Report" certain vehicles on the floor to make up targets.

Most important for you would be to find out when they registered the sale & make sure your warrantee & any maintenance plan is not affected

was this by any chance a fiesta? they are currently on special for R160 000, but they are all pre-registered as the dealer calls it, this was with multiple dealers

I got a pretty substantial discount, so that's why I'm not jumping up and down about it (yet)

It wasn't a fiesta, but this is how it was explained to me.

It's fairly standard, but it is something that should've been disclosed to you beforehand. You won't suffer any loss of residual value, but - as has been mentioned - you do need to establish when your car's warranty and service / maintenance plan were incepted. With most (almost all) manufacturers this will happen when the vehicle is reported to them as sold. Not cool to expect a 3 year warranty, and then only have it be valid for 2 and a half.

Nothing wrong with it at all

We do that in order to offer you a better discount - effectively, we are registering it in our name as a demo unit, and then claiming an extra discount from the factory.

Perfectly Kosher.

No ripping off involved at all.

The only possible negative, is losing a couple of weeks on the Warranty, which is actually nothing in the end. I have just delivered an Outback, exactly this way - the customer ended up losing 8 days on his warranty, but saved nearly 50k in the process.

I also want a Forester or Outback that way :-)

EDIT: Oh, I see it is you, PaulC!

Can you get me an Outback for R400k off?

I'll even allow you to know 365 days off the warranty :p
