OK SO i have to move my file server into my bedroom... so I need to make it quiet...

What do you guys recommend ?

probally gonna have to get new case and psu... maybe even new mobo and ram and cpu... ? any ideas on really quiet components ? or ideas ?

basically runnnin about 1.5TB of storage..

Water cooling, good solid chassis with minimum vibration, sound cushion/damper.

Do you use a server-based platform, or PC platform...? When you use server components, then you will always have a noise of fans, but when using PC platforms, you can go with the standard boxed Intel fans for CPU... Just make sure that your file server is well ventilated, then you don't have to use more fans for cooling.

File "Server" is just a old low end PC. with lots of drive's...

speed is not an issue.. maybe i should look at a miniixt solution

It's only a file server so you won't need much grunt, right? Perhaps get a lower clocked CPU so you don't have to worry about heat, and go for something like the Cooler Master Z600? It's supposed to handle quad cores but that's completely overkill for a file server anyway.

Yeah, watercooling is COMPLETE overkill. Just google for some passive cpu coolers and some low-noise system fans, if you're even going to need those. Zalman do a good range of quiet products.

about to de-rail my own thread but gonna ask....

What soultion would you use Standby or hibernation ? then will some sort of wake -on lan or somthing.. so the server would be "off" till acessed from the network ?

If you want to go this route, you must definitely use STANDBY as it will awake a lot quicker than from hibernation.
