Hi Guys,

I need a new computer, my buget is R4k, I'll be mainly using it to run Ubuntu 10.04 and occassionally for playing GTA games through wineGTA VC, III, San Andreas and IV. I have a 19" Samsung LCD screen, though it is very small, on a separate buget I was thinking of buying a Samsung 40" HD TV or Sinotech 42" HD TV to use as a monitor. Is it recommendable to use such screens as monitors?

Thanks :)

Maybe a core 2 duo with a decent graphics card, 2 - 4 gigs ram will run Ubuntu quite nicely. Keep in mind that it is possible to play older games in wine but the newer stuff is not easy to get going or will not work at all. If you're into games but also want to experience Ubuntu then the best bet for you is to do a dual boot system. Partition your drive, load up windows first on one partition and then load up Ubuntu on the other, use Ubuntu for everything except games. You'll save yourself alot of wine headaches that way, trust me

I don't want to sound like a windows fanboy but you should think about dual booting windows for games dude. You will also need a decent vga card so your budget may need to increase.

Something like a cheap amd quadcore 2 gb memory and maybe a nvidia gts 250 or 260 since someone mentioned ati does not really support linux very well.

You could possible buy a 27" screen for 3k and put the saving into a bigger vga card. No point having a nice huge 40-42 inch screen with a crapish vga card.

I run Ubuntu and originally tried using Wine for the odd game I wanted to play, I eventually gave up and dual booted XP. Unfortunately gaming is one of the things that Linux does not do well and if you want to play games you will need Windows installed.

+1
The tower hardware is much more important than the huge display.
What's the point when you're restricting yourself to a low budget card that won't be able to display on a giant 47" anyway?

I honestly wouldn't buy a pc off BoB... ever

Yeah it's never a good idea. The seller may be legit but there's always a good chance most of the components aren't new etc...

I figured that I'm still young, and I don't have a kid or a dog, why compromise.

One question though, how much will PC international charge me to assemble the PC?
