Need to buy a new computer for someone.... what is the deal with win7 being launched in a couple of months.. I don't want her to have to buy that as well

Wait until its released in October, then.

Some OEM system builders might offer a free upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista if you buy a PC shortly before it's released, but they aren't offering that yet AFAIK.

It's either june or july ( forget which) that comes into effect and not with all versions of vista.

The other option is to register for Windows 7 RC and load that on the PC now.

I am prepared to stick out my neck and say its as stable if not more stable than Vista at this point

If you're going for a notebook, you might as well get a notebook when Windows 7 is fully released and manufacturers pre-install it on the notebooks.

Umm....Windows 7's running fine on my notebook. How's that a problem?

My point is that it wasn't pre-installed. And who said it was a problem?

If someone wants to buy a notebook, it will most probably come with software on it already, so why not wait for Windows 7 to come pre-installed on it?

Was actually replying to Gregg, but I suspect he had the same point. Didn't think of it like that.

You really shouldn't be so defensive, it was an honest question :o

problem is the user need the laptop sort of end of the monthish.. so i probally ain't gonna win... just thought there might be an upgrade option already

I would also consider using the Windows 7 RC version, which is available for free at this stage.

Our firm is already running several PC's (desktops & notebooks) on the Windows 7 RC 64 bit version for testing and data gathering, and so far every test user (including myself) has only had praises for the OS.

If she likes it and it foes not give her problems then she can always buy the retail version when it is available.
