Could you find out at all? I'm probably going to go for the Desire regardless, will just hope for the navigation to get upgraded or something. But would be good to know.

My bro said it works with with turn-by-turn & voice navigation. Unfortunately he lives in Johannesburg and I live in Durban, but I will try to confirm with him later today and get back to you

Sorry but that really is a 'blah blah blah' comment. A phone is designed to work in a certain way and if apple can make the iphone work just fine with those specs then whats the difference? I dont disagree that the Desire is an awesome phone, hell im dying for one, but by now i think we can safely say the value of a phone is not the sum of its of internal parts.

So the fact that the iPhone can't multi-task doesn't matter? A better camera doesn't matter? A bigger processor to handle all the multi-tasking you can throw at it doesn't matter?
I agree most phones are designed for certain purposes, and if you don't care about multi-tasking or having a better camera, bigger screen, faster web browsing, then yes, the iPhone is a good phone.
I figure if you're gonna pay the same price, you may all well get the best features you can, even if you don't utilise them, you always have the option to. Say you want to listen to some music while you check your email? It should be your choice, not an OS limitation.
Would you buy a City Golf for R450'000 as opposed to a BMW/Mercedes/Audi or any other car that offered more luxuries/features?
The internal parts of a cellphone matter because when you can't utilise the available features because it's limited by the internal hardware is pretty pointless don't you think?
iPhone is no competition for the desire (and the 4G version probably won't be either).
The only 2 phones to consider in that price bracket at the moment are the blackberry bold 2 and the htc desire. The BB has the advantage of "free internet" and the push email does work better and battery life is better and you get a keyboard. The desire being a touchscreen is pretty cool because an app can take up your whole phone and not just the top part of it. So browsing with it's whole high res screen is great. Hardly bothering to take my laptop out at night anymore. The touch games are pretty cool too. It's faster and prettier than a bold 2. If your company only allows email integration through BES or you're doing a lot of work afterhours then a bold 2 is probably better for you.

Navigation is available in SA, but not turn by turn voice. You can download the latest Google Maps V4.2 which installs navigation but when you run it it checks if the facility is available in SA ... and then tells you it's not (only US and UK at the moment)
All is not lost :-D ... there is a work around. There is a Brut Google Maps App that will work around the problem. Download and install "Nav Launcher" app from the market. When you run it it asks if you want to use the usual program or the Brut, when you select the Brut it takes you to the download of the brut app and you can go through the install. From there turn by turn voice navigation works with no problems. GPS is good and last year Mapit, who make all the maps for map studio and Garmap, did an alliance with TeleAtlas, who in turn are owned by Google Maps - so the road maps of SA in Google Maps is pretty complete and accurate
You also have to install the voice synthesis application, which by default is not loaded, but can be easily installed through the settings screen
