I am about to open a new 24-month contract with MTN but have had zero experience in this matter, only Vodacom.

My parents are both on MTN contracts and have been for the last 14 years so opening a new contract is foreign to me. I plan to use MTN Direct and get the HTC Desire on a Topup 100 or 200.

So, is there anything I should be aware of or should know when entering into a contract with them via Direct? Anything about the CPA I should be aware of?

My shortlist:
* If you can rather get it from a shop, that's better. MTN Direct can be very "indirect" sometimes.
* The call rates on Anytime 100/200 contract or topup for peak/offpeak are very similar during peak times. If you're going to talk even for a few minutes during the day then rather get it on Anytime OFFpeak Topup (the ads don't mention that you can always choose between peak and OFFpeak).
* Make triple sure the contract you sign is for the right package. It is extremely painful to convince someone that a mistake was made and secondly to get it changed without some billing/lost minutes anomaly creeping in.
* Register for loyalty points - sms bundles on that are good value.
* Make double sure they properly RICA you.
* If you're going to port, then please see previous point.
* Make sure what you're billing date is going to be
* First month will be prorata on subscription and airtime/sms.
* Have you checked coverage where you live?
* Wait until you're line's fully active and working before loading any sms/data bundles
* Call rates are more expensive if you run out of airtime and then use topped up airtime.

That's my 2c.

Thanks for that!
I'll shop around. It's not entirely urgent at the moment as I have an MTN and Vodacom number and two phones which I can use. The problem being that there is ONLY MTN signal in my area so I have to go with MTN and my Vodacom contract is costing me a fortune every month for something I can't even use.

I will not be porting so RICA SHOULD be straight-forward.

Thank you for telling me about the prorata. I was unsure about this.

Great post, I want to open an account with them as well, I don't know if I should just wait until the new CPA regs come into play

I've been with MTN for almost 10 years now and by and large am very happy with the service.

I've found with talking to people that a lot of the customers who have been with them for more than 5 to 8 years are very satisfied and have never had problems.

And whatever you do, don't sign with a 3rd party (Autopage, Nashua, etc)....
