Regional customer care are now creating a new order for me.

Pity Telkom management dont bother to read these forums ... they're too busy coming up with "innovative new solutions" to fsck us over with.

Telkom is gona make big bucks of this , peaple who know nothining will go for it as its cheaper still pretty high speeds and always on . and you dont have to have a line of such good quality to run that on . o yes the deal sucks but they are a buissness and this was a brilliant move from they side . with this they cover more areas who have bad quality lines . and cover a whole new market base who dont have that much money . peaple are mostly not educated when it comes to things like this . and will be blineded by the price.
 
"relative quality" comes into play here.

The ADSL line I have at the office indicates it could run at 1.654 mbs if telkom allowed it.

One of my customers has an ADSL link that indicates a maximum throughput of 640kbs ... significantly lower.

I think what alex indicates is that my line at home, running through crappy cables in the complex would not be able to sustain the 512kbs speed requirement but should work fine for the 384kbs requirement.

So possibly a far larger market segment becomes both tehnically and financially available.
 
also. This would allot them to have more people on 1 PSxx (where the adsl links to the underground network). I think its a smart move. If they offered a 128k connection for R200 rental I would go fot that. I could get me 6gigs and it would be affordable to me, if they only counted international to downloads.

Here's a suggestion for Telkrap, if any of their marketing bozos read this site - if you want to take steps to retain your market share in the face of impending losses come competitive offerings from 01 February 2005, offer packages with a sliding scale based on bandwidth volume capacity. In other words, something like -

(A) Base package with 3Gb/384 = Rxx.xx
(B) Base package with 3Gb/512 = (Rxx.xx)/384*512
(C) Intermediate Usage package with 6Gb/384 = (A)+(A)/3*0.5
(D) Intermeduate Usage package with 6Gb/512 = (B)+(B)/3*0.5
(E) Super Usage package with 9Gb/384 = (A)+(A)/3*0.75
(F) Super Usage package with 9Gb/512 = (B)+(B)/3*0.75
(G) Excess Usage package with 12Gb/384 = (A)+(A)/3*1.5
(H) Excess Usage package with 12Gb/512 = (B)+(B)/3*1.5

At the same time, get rid of the line charge entirely, as it is just simply unethical to charge for something that has been paid for many times over already by others.

From a billing point of view, charge everybody the Base package minimum, keep on monitoring usage as you're wont to do (making sure that it's accurate, of course), and allow for scaling-up of charges to the next category of usage if the monthly volume usage exceeds the category ceiling.

What could be more simpler than that, at the same time making the majority of your client base happy chappies, assuring yourselves of sustained revenues in the future, and improving you image substantially in the eyes of the general public?!
 
Like I said before,for a saving of R300 per month its woth it.
You sacrafice a bit of speed that you couldnt really use anyways because of their port priotizing.
Maybe u score using a local hub but thats about it.
Everything else you would use high speed for has been shaped,so Ive made that little sacrafice and save $$$
 
Yeah I also think it's worth it. Look, I'm not disputing that it's too expensive, but in SA at the moment thats a given. But bearing in mind that we are going to get ripped off, this is not too bad an option. A little bit of a (theoretical) speed loss for a nice bit of price reduction. Means I can hit my cap 20% later and have money left over for a top up account.
