New crappy ADSL offering

Got this email today:

On 6th September 2004 Telkom will be launching a new aspect to ADSL for the Home user.

2 gig limit completely capped
Speeds will be 384 incoming and 128 outgoing
The installation charge R404.00
The fixed line charge will be R449.00 vat inclusive.

ISP Portion R200.00 per month

Down grade from existing 512 line is R250.00 ex vat once off

Please note Telkom will only provide this service to a residential land line.


2 Gb (Combined national and international download and upload).
If the 2 Gb cap is reached at any time during the month, the Internet
service is stopped. The customer then has the option of purchasing
additional user accounts as is required for the remainder of the month, alternately the customer will again have access to the 2 Gb service at the beginning of the following calendar month.

What do you mean is it ok? It's from my ISP's (Kingsley) monthly newsletter... I'm sure it's ok. Besides there isn't one of those "This is our stuff and thou may not copy and paste this sacred word of ours" at the bottom. And anyways... I'm sure they don't mind the advertising.

Now what makes this ADSL line rental cheaper than the existing R680 ADSL line? The same line, same technology. Surely this is proof that they (overcharge) subsidise their ISP traffic? The slightly cheaper ISP charge would make sense. (Anyway...still way overpriced and the stupid cap and... )

Ok Guys, lets be serious now as I'm sure Telkom will read this post.

My views:

<b>Pros:</b>
R231.00 reduction in line rental.
Cheaper option for a home user
R50 to R139 drop in the cost of the ISP

<b>Cons:</b>
2 gig cap.
Down grade from existing 512 line is R250.00
128 downgrade in incoming and outgoing speeds
Still not going to be the deal breaker for ADSL.
Dynamic IP
Once 2 gigs is reached the service terminates.
What is the cost of additional bandwidth?

For many home users the drop in speeds would not be an issue, seeing that many haome users are so used to slow 56k or maybe ISDN. The Dynamic IP shouldn't be an issue with home users, but still isn't the ideal way that ADSL could be run.
No mention of the cost of additional bandwidth. This will push the price up. As it is the home user is in for a bill of R449.00 plus R200.00, which relates to R649.00.
This is about a saving of R350.00 per month. But if additional bandwidth is required then this would reduce the saving.
The 2 gig cap is only sufficient for a single home user. Probably a person that is more of a novice and requires the internet for email and browsing. You wont be able to download any service packs or files.
Plus if you are cut off, this could prove a hassle for the customer to upgrade. Imagine if it was a weekend or in the middle of the evening. Will the customer be able to buy an extra gig?

The deal would benefit the small time user. At least its cheaper than R1009.00, which is the basic cost of the 512 product with 3 gigs, but will always remain on.

Telkom need now to focus on the power user IMO. Telkom should offer the existing 512 service a lot cheaper. They have paid for the DSlams now.

<b>If Telkom can offer the new service at a line rental of R449.00, you tell me now what is the difference between the 512 and the 384 service as far as line rental goes. Remember it is still line rental and telkom should not be allowed to charge for bandwidth through rentals. Bandwidth is an ISP charge. Telkom should offer the same line rental to the existing 512 ADSL accounts immediately. What’s the difference? Its still a home user with a copper line to the exchange onto a port on the DSlam.</b>

I think a lot of novice users will take them up on this. Afterall, it is a much more realistic price. Still expensive when compared to almost any other country, but much more affordable than the present offering. I would also like an explanation as to how they can offer the line rental at R449 for this package and not for all packages. R449 is still ridiculous, but a lot better than R680. I would personally be satisfied with the slower speed at a lesser price. But 2GB? Are they out of their minds? You should get at least 10GB for that price.

Well... it says that when you hit your 2 Gig cap you have the option of buying additional user accounts... so I would assume that's another R200 for another 2 gigs

Why they so hasseld about no internet after 2 gig .they could make it just local same as it is now.
This looks like the begining of many packages to be released just to confuse the public.

The total cost of around R650 pm is competing with MyWireless, iBurst, and possibly Vodacom/MTN 3G.

I recently read that Vodacom is rushing to roll out 3G in the metro areas in time for the "festive season" and that it will be "competitively priced" - it is not clear competive to what.

I see this as a Telkom move to reduce the competition.

Still, I would prefer slower wireless (if it is functional) to a fixed line for the same price. Especially if it is uncapped.

well why cant thet do somthing that makes sense ...

64kbs uncaped (6G prehaps) for this price as a start ... then drop the line rental ...
or for a bit more 128k uncaped ...

take sentech on head on and give us good service ... then let the price wars begin telkom you want happy customers ripping them off is a bad idea check your share price for proof of that ...
 
Telkom and sensible don't go together. I for one would be quite happy with 128kbps uncapped at say... R350 per month total. Or if they cap the cost of local calls so as to make using 128k ISDN viable as an always-on jobbie. Good enough for me; seeing as ADSL will only be available here in like March next year (supposedly).

Thats just dumb. It doesn't matter if they were offering you 256k, 384k or 512k it costs them the same. With this knowledge someone can force them to bring normal adsl line rental down.

The R449 Price is much better. The 384k down and 128k up is also fine. however 2gigs thats plain just impossible. Thats a stupid move!

the best option would of been R449 rental. 256k down 128k down, 5gig cap. ISP to charge their prices accordingly. They should allow you 2 use any account. Weather the account was one with a 3gig cap from 512 or not.

Wow isnt this just typical. The rest of the world ISP's are offering faster lines.

Now as a novelty and "new service" we get offerd a slower line with a smaller cap, and wait for it, for still 400% more than 1Mb ADSL in the UK. I LOVE TELKOM YES!
