New crappy ADSL offering

the people at telkom who thought up this package is not right in the head. No internet after 2GIG!?!?! this is like a trap to people that isn't very internet literate.
 
The oke that dreamt up this new service must have been the same chap that did the 4 gig unshaped product. No thought for customers needs or wants, just how much they can put in their pocket. Until Telkom significantly reduce or take away the line rental, nothing will really be right in South Africa as all products are biased towards Telkom's bank account. The negotiation with ADSL products should lie in the hands of the ISP and not Telkom and you shouldn't need to take out a bank overdraft just to pay for line rental. I wonder in this last year how many times I have paid for that port on the exchange and the copper wire to it. 12xR680 = R8160.00

Telkom will remain the problem, untill we get some real competion.
a fair price for line rental would be around R100. nothing more!

Don't forget the talk about the existing ADSL product, I read somewhere that by the end of this year, 3GB will be the full amount, ie no more local!!!
 
dorris when the cap was first sugested thaty is how it was meant to operate 3gb and no more there was a massive outcry about this from more technicaly aware folk at telkom tele confrenses were held to discuss it and product managers informed of the ramifications of this a compromise was to allow local browsing and email to make customers happy ...

knowing the way telkom works they will be clamping down on "abuse" uncapped accounts and the like ODS/Storm/DataPro mweb will remain there darlings with a 3/6/9 Gb option the one way of doing this is implement ADSL the way it was first rolled out 3 and no more ... they can do this as this is what you signed up for nowhere in the product spec is unlimited local specified ...

they are dumb enough to do this ....
 
This is the same rip off, repackaged, so that more people can afford to be ripped off.
Telkom is taking advantage of the fact that they are the only true broadband provider in SA and the desperate masses have nowhere else to go...
 
Well, from what I can tell, according to the announcement on the myADSL front page, it's merely a different speed package (not a different capping package), so it's less line rental but you're still going to have to get an account with some ISP (where the capping is enforced). So, for those of you with less bandwidth requirements can reduce your line rental cost by R200-odd, but ISP charges remain the same.
 
I think it is in line with creating competetion fro Sentech however since Voice can be run as of th 15 of Feb, Telkom is going to **** of as they will have to limit bandwidth !

Just spoke to someone at Telkom's call desk about this new service... It took the lady about 10 minutes to find out about it because she didn't know it exists... She then put me through to another guy that explained to me how ADSL works (I could hear that he was reading it from something).
Anyways, it took him a while, but he confirmed that the Cap was still either the 3Gb Shaped or 4Gb UnShaped, thus the offering does not look too bad, but it can still be better. I'll consider moving over to the new offering.
 
Dean, correct me if I'm wrong but can't ISPs construct the ADSL ISP part however they want these days? So surely a smart ISP would look at offering a per GB charge for both local and intl respectively?
I ask this because I personally would dig to have a DSL line with unlimited local and intl per GB. That way I can game locally on the cheap, and buy intl GBs as I need them [:)]

Where did you get the 2GB limit from? I phoned Telkom this morning and they gave me this information:

Cost for HomeDSL384 - R449 VAT Inc
+ ProLog - R249 VAT Inc
3 GB cap (as per the 512 option)
 
From what I can gather from the telkom site, the 3GB cap also applies to the 384 package.

Can anyone confirm what dodgyrabbit found out from Telkom? If this is the case this is looking a lot more like a better deal...

Correct. I was given this info from the helpdesk as well i.e. 3 gig cap applies as per the 512 shaped package. They wereen't able to confirm whether you could get the 384k package <b>unshaped</b>, but I guess you can.
 
almost affordable. R700 much better than R920. If they can release a 256k version for R500(R260 - rent + R240 - ISP) that would be great.
