New crappy ADSL offering

Telkom should be charging a flat rate of R250 for DSL line rental with speed cpacity up to 512K. Then what kind of speed and service u receive over that line should be between u and your ISP. Telkom really should not have any say.

Dont you think the ISP's are charging too much as well. R240 a month is a lot for an e-mail address and 10mb of web space that no one uses.
 
The ISPs generally are just reselling the account provided by Telkom, so they dont have much say when it comes to your basic 3GB shaped account...

Uhh .. the ISPs have to pay Telkom for the bandwidth the user uses, so it's not just for an email account and web space. That's also why TelkomInternet can charge so little for their ISP service.

telkom internet is a massive cash cow .... not only making money from ISP charges but telkom makes money from calls/line rentals ... and they have used there dominamnt possision to be anti competitive ...
 
also wonderd if you get charged new installation fee if u downgrade from 512 to 384?

Not the normal R404 installation. According to CreepyCrawley's post it was a R250 once off fee to change between packages. I wonder how this is justified?

lewstherin : I said that before, can't we lodge a complain about the different line rental prices. Since its the same line and same hardware, they are clearly over charging.

Eitherways R500 is a decent price for a 24/7 internet connection. Alot of people are'nt willing to spend R1000/R750 on internet. I would swop tmr if there was a 256k/128k package for R500 with no cap. good latency and bit torrent!! I download about 10gigs a month, a comprimise would be 8gigs.

Oh well like I said before SNO.

But does anyone know about the internet access after the 3 gig cap?
Is it the same as it is now,ie- local still fast speeds?
Or is there no access at all?
 
Well the main thing is that it is <u>available now</u> and we are <u>saving money.</u> With the R231.00 we save, we can buy another 3Gigs and have a 6Gig account for the same as we paying now with only a small drop in speed. Quite honestly there are very few sites that can handle a full 512kb. Microsoft for one and places like Nvidia, etc. So generally I can't see it making that much of a difference. But the 6 Gigabyte uncapped will make the world of difference.
Lastly you don't have to sign any binding contracts for the next two years and you can change at any time, to anything else better that may come up in the near future. So I say, go for it.
 
Can I ask a stupid question?

If I get an ADSL line and I use it to connect to my ISP using an existing dial-up account, does it work? I guess not. Has anyone tried?

I would be happy to pay their "reduced" price if I didn't run up call charges connecting to my ISP. i.e. I would connect at 56k if it meant I could stay connected all the time. After all, that's what I'm getting with MyWireless [;)]

Any workarounds, folks?

That is not true. The vast majority of websites support speeds of 10+ Mb. It is Telkom that is strangling you, not websites.
 
Telkom was supposed to have provided ICASA with a cost breakdown structure of their tarifs by end August. Has this been done? This should show how Telscum are ripping the public off and cross subsidising their products

Unlike Creepy's enlightening comment I thought I'd add my 2 cents worth...

You could still dial up to your ISP on the ADSL line... but you'd have to use a standard modem on one of the filtered ports... so you'd be paying for a normal call etc ...

Using your normal dial-up account via the ADSL link would not work unless it's a telkomsa account - this account (if ADSL enabled) gives you dial-up,T-Zone and ADSL access.

Hope this explains a bit.
 
Just returned from 4 years in Amsterdam. The choices there with Planet Internet are:
416 for R189 pm (no joining cost, free modem, no data limit, 25mb space, 4 mailboxes and 5 email addresses per mailbox), 1120 for R245pm, 2240 for R392pm, 4480 for R560pm. In NL no-one has ever heard of shaping or capping....not mentioned on any ISP site. Therefore Telkom's new offering is pretty pathetic.

Not only Telkom I'm afraid. Other ISPs here are also very greedy. Even accounting for the bandwidth they have to buy, how much does it actually cost to maintain and run servers. Most of them are little fly-by-night operations only in it to make as much money as possible. It's high time someone broke the mold and instead of colluding with Telkom would actually provide some real choice.
