New crappy ADSL offering

Anyone know the answer to these? :

1) Can you get the 4gb permacap service on the homedsl398 package? Saving R230 odd does take some of the sting out of the outrageouse 4gb user cost.

2) Can you still use any ISP on the homedsl398 package?

MaD, don't get MaD at me, but you cannot really compare pricing directly that way. Their broadband may be cheaper, but other stuff is very expensive. The price we pay for a home in a nice neigbourhood with a big yard, double garage, big rooms is the same as a small, damp stuffy appartment in the UK. Try and buy a lekker juicy stake at Safeway or ADSA in the UK and you pay 4 times as much as here.

Everybody has their problems. They might even have a forum in the UK on housing, complaining that the houses are "so cheap" in SA. ;-)

Houses aren't actually that cheap here but I know steaks are pricy over there... From what I've been able to tell the only difference is that the connection is 384kbit as opposed to 512kbit for a difference of R230. None of the other features or drawbacks have changed. And whoever said that you need 512kbit for VoIP is nuts, you need about 28kbit for VoIP.

Anyone who takes a 24 month contract to get a free modem is nuts, a DSL router costs what? R800 or less, and you can get a cheapie USB DSL modem for less than R400.

Arf's plan:
1. Cancel Sensucks MyWireless (24/7 is ok, but what's the point when you're capped to 56K)
2. Install Hellkom ADSL 384.
3. Buy the cheapest possible DSL modem.
4. Wait for alternatives.....iBurst, SNO, IP over electricity cable, anything that works.

from what I can tell, this is the standard ADSL with a cheaper line rental.
ALL TK does is provide the same line, limited to 384Kbps at the DSLAM, and sells 3GB accounts at the same price as the 512.

my initial arguments of , this proves the line rental is overpriced is actually invalid now, TK can turn around and say, in fact they still charging R2xx for 3GB bandwisth and a line capable of 2/3 the bandwidth costs 2/3 the price, we all know thats trash. But it does put them in a better light.

I'm again going with MaD here. Telkom is nutterz as always. They are just pathetic and its a shame that we still have to use them.

We can't just accept what we get, you have to complain if the standard is below par and take things as far as needed. Otherwise nothing will improve in the world...

Well after rading this, it seems Telkom has completely confused the crap out of everyone (including myself) regarding thise new "offering" - how unsurprising. Maybe if their website wasn't the pathetic maze of useless information and hidden links (literally, their hyperlinks are rarely underlined), it'd be easier for us to find the information we need.

Except most new houses here are built like crap - some new complex developments have gone up near me, and the brickwork is shockingly bad (hence why few houses have the bricks visible), and I've noticed that the bricks the use aren't the correct integriry either.

Saving money on a house must be nice though, especially if in 5-10 years, it needs to be re-built.

Greetings All

Popped into the Customer Services Branch today. Decided to take the plunge to Home384 option. The lady who handled my request said that I won't be charged the migration fee 'cos it's a 'special project' (promotion) that they're running. I'll only believe it when the bill comes through.

She gave me an order number & said that they will contact me. She didn't know how long it would take though. will keep you guys posted.

Well I downgraded over the phone and they said "do you know about the R250.00 downgrade charge"
So looks like I wasnt offerd the "PROMOTION" package.

dorris, I think it actually proves that TK are overcharging for the 512k offering. The 348k option uses exactly the same hardware, etc, so it costs TK the same as the 512k option. This means the the "early adopters" paid for the hardware, so they can now offer the 384k option at a lower price, even though it actually has the same cost the the 512k option.

Thanks for that MaD. Don't like the answer to Question 3 though (shaping). I'm assuming it's a fully shaped product, and that, like it currently works with the 512 account - one can buy an unshaped isp account, simply with a slower 384K line.

what is most alarming is point number 2. The fact that local also slows down. Or am I reading this wrong?

Seeing member claim that when the cap kicks in speeds are so slow that it takes google 10 minutes to open. How long won't your mail take to download? 5 years?

If I read that right, local and international cease to exist after you are capped.

In other words you are unplugged from the net for all intents and purposes. Although there have been other posts contradicting this?

I have spoken to 3 different people at Telkom and they have all told me the same thing. It's EXACTLY the same as the ADSL512 in EVERY single way except for speed.

So that means international becomes mostly unusable but local stays the same after you've been capped.
