wab, I dunno who u contacted? but I called Telkom and according to them the ISP side of things works the same way as the 512k offering: Prolog = 3GB shaped, local at full speed after the cap.
If u are referring to the Cybersmart guys, then that offer is downright stingy...

Telkom needs a leash, ICASA needs some guts, and the SA consumer needs to make it happen

Called them now, basically it's the same as 512 with all the pathetic drawbacks, and it has a 3GB cap not 2GB. Capping is same as 512 where local stays normal speed. But she also said that the TelkomInternet for the 384 is R249/mo, same as for 512 which makes no sense at all.

Either way both services are a rip-off for what we get. For the same price as the 384 one can get two 4Mbit unlimited connections in the UK. I feel ashamed to have Telkom as our telecommunications provider, they are an embarrassment to the country. But hey that's just my opinion. There's SBC busy rolling out Fibre to people's homes in the States - here they rip the a*s out of prices and overcharge us 100's of % for their own gain.

Telkom is the opposite of any form of progress. By the way the woman said only 2 year contract bundles available, no monthly.

Where others have progress, we have Telkom.

so I was right. The reason they launched this was to get people bound to them before february. R200 cheaper makes a big difference in alot of peoples books.

Oh well,Im downgrading,the way I see it is Ill save 300 bucks a month.
What can u really do with 512k anyway?
You cant play games on overseas servers(because of shaping)
You cant watch streaming video(same as above)
P2P is the same aswell(same as above)

So Ill save R300-00 a month and just sacrafice a little bit of speed.
Makes sense to me........

You dont have to sign a 24 month contract to get the 384k package.

Well according to Telkom's page, both packages are exactly the same except for the new package being slightly slower. No where do they state there is a 2GB cap, so both are 3GB with throttled international once you're capped. And Harth is right, you do not have to take a contract, you just have to pay the R250 odd to downgrade. But if you want the modem bundled in, then you take the contract. Only a sucker would take the bundle now.

What modems does Telkom allow you to "buy" with their 24 month contract?

Yes I heard this too. Maybe if Telkom offered you a blank cheque to purchase a modem of your choice, it might be more feasible. Hence my question as to what modem are they offering. Perhaps someone or Telkom can post some specs for people to see. At least it could be from an informed point of view and not maybe form perhaps an emotional one. I would suggest a router over a modem that has at least the basic PPoe onboard.

People that cannot afford the outlay of a modem, but can afford to pay the monthly rental, even though we know its high, might see the offer for face value. I would just hate those people to sit with a piece of hardware that will give them endless problems.

I'm trying to be fair given the current situation. We have no other offers on the table yet.

Somebody told telkom you need 512kbs for voip.
so they quickly strategised that if everyone had 384(/2)
they could then offer an upgrade in 2005 and get more money
for voip. dumb sods.

One of my customers just applied for the downgrade to the 384K option... they were NOT informed of ANY 24 month contract ... Any additional clarity here ?

MaD, don't get MaD at me, but you cannot really compare pricing directly that way. Their broadband may be cheaper, but other stuff is very expensive. The price we pay for a home in a nice neigbourhood with a big yard, double garage, big rooms is the same as a small, damp stuffy appartment in the UK. Try and buy a lekker juicy stake at Safeway or ADSA in the UK and you pay 4 times as much as here.

Everybody has their problems. They might even have a forum in the UK on housing, complaining that the houses are "so cheap" in SA. ;-)

Alot of these posts go to prove why people are fed up with Telkom service. They launch a new product, you phone them for the info and five different people tell you five different answers.

Surely it cannot be that difficult for every Telkom staff member to quantify terms and conditions of a product. No training.

And Deckert is right on pricing UK-SA, but it is not the Grand Canyon it once was. We have caught up quickly. Fortunately fillet is still a quarter the price
