New decent laptop..

Update:

Ended up getting the E6530, the i7, 8GB ram, backlit keyboard etc.

First impressions were:
The thing is built like a tank. Heavyish but worth it. Superb build quality. Unfortunately the model I got only has a 500GB 7200RPM HDD so feels a bit sluggish compared to my desktop with a SSD but it is still noticably quick when dealing with multiple VMs and large databases. The SSD version is over R20k

The 2nd day I had it I tapped the Windows/Start button and the key popped right off... lol. I thought so much for superb aluminium and magnesium chassis if keyboard breaks in 1 day. Called Dell support and the next day a on site technician replaced the entire keyboard without even trying to fix it, no questions asked which was pretty impressive.

Overall happy with my choice.
 
Good choice! Popped a SSD in mine and clean installed Windows 8, now it doesn't want to go into sleep mode, obviously a faulty driver somewhere ;0) It's basically complete quiet, even under some load.

To justify: my Dell at home is still pretty much solid after about 4 years of general use. Our company switched from Lenovo to Dell about 3 years ago and they are awesome machines that cope with what we throw at them (long hours, continuous processing etc). They just won't break.

And then there is Dell's warranty...

Don't know why people are going on about looks of the laptop. If you are going Lenovo, then it is going to look like a 2002 laptop. However, nobody can argue with Lenovo build quality!

If you looking for performance and value for money, no questions asked: Lenovo Y580. Why? Because it's a gaming laptop! It has an amazing i7 CPU, with 8GB DDR3 1600mhz (not the normal 1333mhz), but the best thing of all is the GPU, a 660M <-- This baby will let you play latest games on decent settings with no mayor drop in FPS. It was on sale at Chaos Computers a while ago for R9000. And there is no other laptop that could even come close to it in performance for that price!!

Go read some reviews on the laptops, it will give you a better understanding around the value of a laptop. However, if you (for some odd reason) was not looking at performance or value for money, then you could choose anything. If you are going for looks, then Lenovo is not the way to go. If you are looking at performance than the Trackpad shouldn't bother you, disable it and use a mouse to work 3 times faster.

I'm sure the E6530 would make you happy. It is also a very good laptop and looks way better than the Y580! If you don't even bother with video encoding or games, than the E6530 is probably best for you.

If I had to make that decision, I would take the Y580 based on value for money and performance. Also, grab a SSD from Rebeltech for the E6530. If there are issues, would probably be compatibility issues or drivers.
 
Read the whole thread. Where did I say looks matter? I wanted a fast machine that feels solid. To me the y580 didn't feel any different to an entry level machine.

I'm talking about people in general. People that want a white or blue laptop, etc. For me, it is more about application performance.

Btw, you did say: "It looks and feels like a R4000 Celeron." and it probably does look like a Celeron, if Celeron had a distinct look.
