Good Day

So my eyes were opened to the fact that Dell has released what they call a Dell XPS 15 with infinity display. Its the most gorgeous laptop I have seen. The full HD, the necessary slots and power from a dedicated nvidia GTX 960M gfx card and ontop of all that jazz that include WIFI and Bluetooth a super long lasting battery life and SSD. I dont think I can be convinced otherwise. I was thinking of moving over to mac since i'm into design and video however I saw a video of this dell on youtube and I was hooked. This is the perfect upgrade to my ancient dell studio xps 16.

My question is, when will this be available in SA and if it is, what price can I expect to pay for it? Will it cost an arm and a leg for just the 1080p HD Matte display with dedicated graphics card and SSD?

Oh my goodness!! That much!! I guess I need to start looking for alternatives then. Way over my budget and far too much to spend on a laptop in my opinion. Any alternatives out there that are light and thin and can handle design and media and maybe abit of light gaming? Perhaps something like dell xps 13 or an alternative of it?

I was going by the price of the current 3200x1800 XPS 15 which is around 30k...so 25k is just ballpark. Only look at these out of curiosity as my work wouldn't pay for one so I don't have one :(

I'm sure others on here have thin + light laptops and can provide input.

Alright. I will wait for more feedback. My current dell could fall apart any minute and I was finding it difficult getting something that is basically an upgrade of what I have till I saw the dell xps 15 and was blown away. I guess it will remain a dream. The festive season is also upon us and someone may let go a decent laptop for a very decent price so I'll keep my eyes peeled.
Heartbreaking though to just find out the laptop is about 30k. After all the excitement...

How much did you expect to pay for it?

The pricing on these are comparable to Macbook Pro's.

Since the clips I had seen was from folks in the state I made th emistake of assuming if the price is about $1000 then multipy that by 13 and i have a ballpark figure of costs here. But that is now doubled. I know there are import costs and all that but 30k which is what im seeing online is just shocking. Perhaps thats why people buy tech online and have it shipped here.

I got both my XPS 15's (L521X gen 4's) second hand. Both with balance of dell NBD (about 2.5 years left).
Paid R10k for one and R12k for the other. Bargain!
Check around the second hand sites. May hit a luck.
Also picked up 2 XPS 13's for even less.

How would you rate the L521x? Any good? I have looked around and I did spot some fairly recent dells at affordable prices on gumtree and olx. So that may be where I end up getting a decent laptop at an affordable price.

I used to hop between different brands quite frequently. When I settled on my first Dell years back (L702X) I fell in love with the brand. Only owned XPS's since.

The L521X is the best IMO. Solid good performing machine, and looks sexy. The keyboard is also awesome. All round classy and brilliant machine. You won't be sorry.

My first dell was a studio xps 1645 and I still love it. I can game on it, render on it. Design on it full time. Spoilt with all the ports that I could ever want. Awesome backlit keyboard. It has it all. And to think this is a late 2009 laptop. Wear and tear has me searching for a replacement. But thank you for all the input. I'll look more into that dell and see what it comes equipped with. Time for me to move from 1st gen core i7.

I've been trying to get a proper quote from Dell to buy this for my boss, but have had no luck. Instead they keep on quoting me on the older version  I have the Dell XPS 13 and the bigger screen in the smaller form factor is the attraction to us.

Is there anyone who can help me get a proper quote? Here is the link to the website http://www.dell.com/za/enterprise/p/xps-15-9550-laptop/pd

Just got another reply: "The Dell XPS15 is end of life with no current replacement yet". The pitfalls of living in Africa!

Sold a brand new XPS 13 to a client a week ago. R 27 000 excl.

I think the 13 and 15 will be in SA end of January 2016, with the 6th Gen CPU. Only the 13 currently available in SA with 5th Gen CPU. That is probably what the mean with XPS 15 being EOL....changing from 5th to 6th Gen. CPU.

It is yes. The SA tech market is run by massive sharks adding ultra-ridiculous markups onto everything and claiming its the "exchange rate", where every moron can look up the exchange rate and find out they're full of BS.

Best solution - buy from the US and have it shipped. Even with shipping costs and VAT it will still turn out cheaper usually.

Hi gents

Not going into detail but i work for n rather big company, we put some pressure on DELL for the xps 13 5th gen quote arguing that over a year we would at least get 8 for my specific team and a lot more if we liked their service and the machine. They where horrible to work with and we had a lot of trouble to get to a decent quote, they first send wrong quotes with different model etc but after some time of giving them absolute hell they gave us the models for a very very good price, i guess they just cracked. We paid 20k ex vat for the i7 infinity touch display with 256gb ssd.

Best work/travel machine of my life but to tell you the truth its almost not worth it for the effort we put in for the machines. Regardless, as i sit here im very happy with the machine.

Yeah the pitfalls of living in South Africa! I also made an inquiry to Wootware and Raru both of which stated that their supplier would only receive the dell xps 15 in the 1st quarter of 2016............

EDIT: Called Dell SA, said the earliest they would get it is end of Jan. Additionally no information regarding pricing but he said you can expect the the i7 base model to be +35000....... wow

Im thinking of rather buying it from the US because even after tax and customs i'd still probably save at least 8000 as compared to when to laptop will come out to South Africa, based on how much the old xps 15 is costing now...

Make very sure about the warranty though. Calling for the NBD Onsite Support with a Service Tag number of a Dell device not bought through EMEA channels my lead to problems.

Thanks for the heads up! By that what exactly do you mean?
Would it not be possible to buy or upgrade the warranty status if the US warranty was only applicable in the US?

The best thing would be to find out if the warranty included with your purchase is a GLOBAL warranty. If NOT, you will have to find out locally IF you can purchase a warranty here.
