New desktop PC advice

Ah, didn't know that, thanks. So a 4 DIMM board is actually pointless on an i7 setup?

LGA1366 boards will have either 3 or 6 dimm slots. Thats for i7 9xx CPUs.
LGA 1156 boards will have 4 slots, thats for i7 8xx CPUs.

So in that case you would want 3 or 6 dimms since its an LGA1366 motherboard.

The first Intel X58 mobos had 4 slots, 3 for tri-channel and then another one. Don't ask me why....

Edit: The intel smackover

No argument that the 1090T is value for money.
Personally feel the x58 is overpriced but I still love the i7 860 (and my little i5).
How much would memory bandwidth affect his use of the computer (for his specific applications?)? I'm thinking significantly? And Either way you look at it Intel dominates this with almost 50% increased speed over AMD.. http://www.guru3d.com/article/phenom-ii-x6-1055t-1090t-review/15 <- these are synthetic so real life applications wont be this far apart I think.. But still worth a mention.

Although AMD has 2 more cores than the i7's, in heavy threaded apps they only perform slightly better and not even all the time..

In a CS4 benchmark Intel's still dominate http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...1055t-1090t-six-core-processors-review-8.html (even my i5 is better)

I still kind of think their 6 core is fail compared to Intel's 4 cores.. But Intels pricing on their 6 cores is even more fail!
So I don't know.. I feel the i7 860 or i7 930 are the right choice for your needs. And if pricing comes into it, I'd swing to the i7 860..
But that's just me..

Turns out my budget is now not 10k (I'm not paying for this machine), so I have to come in cheaper.

Are there any RAM configuration requirements for the Phenom II X6 T1055 (e.g. the i7 needs sets of 3)?

Yes, you need DDR3 memory, preferably 2 sticks. Though it will work with just one as well, same as i7

Ok, I'll get 2 x 2gig DDR3 for now, another 2 when I complain in a few weeks about lack of memory. Can you recommend a good mobo for that CPU, with 4 RAM slots? And a decentish/cheap graphics card, can always upgrade later.

They keep saying buy cheap now and upgrade in a few weeks, but it's a dumb idea not to start with a proper mobo. I'm looking at the M4A79T Deluxe on pcint, but don't need the 2000 speed if I'm going to get the 1600 RAM. Anything similar to that that comes in cheaper? I don't need SLI but do want the 4 memory slots.

Take this rather. Has all the new bells and whistles and is a bit cheaper. Right now if you are buying an AMD PC then you want to have a 800 series northbridge

Thanks Archer.

I will have to get a DDR3 graphics card, yes?

No, the memory on the GPU has nothing to do with the motherboard. Aim for GDDR5 memory on the GPU, it uses less power, is faster etc

Wait, that board you posted has an onboard graphics card, doesn't it? Could use that for now.

For your use of the machine I would still recommend a proper GPU, several of the programs mentioned in the OP will make use of it. But yes, the board does have an onboard GPU. But dont complain when your programs run slow on it :p

Ya, I know it will be slow without a proper GPU, but I need to get a budget for a machine approved asap and add more memory and a GPU later. The PC that they gave me to work on took ten minutes to open a browser. I'm typing this on a tiny Macbook :)
