I need some recommendations for new devices for my 3 kids.

Current devices are:
Kid 1 - 23 yr old - Oppo A74 (has it 3 years since new)
Kid 2 - 18 yr old - Oppo A74 (has it 3 years since new)
Kid 3 - 14 yr old - Samsung S8 (has it 3 years received as a hand me down)

All 3 are currently on Vodacom Top up contracts getting around R200 per month and all the contract terms are finished/eligible for upgrade. I'm paying about R600 for all 3 contracts combined.

Any decent devices on <R300 per month contracts? Or decently priced second hand devices I could get for R5k-R6k cash?

Kid 3 wants a S22. So that would be second hand cash.

Kids 1 & 2 mainly use their devices for Games, Youtube/YT music & Spotify.

Any recommendations would be great.

S22 or S23 FE would be around the price range. Just get everyone this same phone?

Wait 23 year old? Go out get a job, pay for your own phone. At 23 I was already paying a car off :p, kid 2 18, go out get a job... At 18 I was working 3 jobs while studying :-P
Kid 3, get them an A34/A54
Samsung S22 will still be around 7 to 9k. Also look at A54 or A55 for them

14 year old can also earn their own money. When I was that age, all I got was beatings.

jumping in on this topic as I'm sure it has been done before but effective thread mybb search is a skill I am yet to acquire.

(according to her) long suffering 13yr old is getting a device before going to high school.
mom is on mtn, dad on vodacom
She will probably get mom's old oppo that is out of contract. She is not happy with that, but it won't even be hers but a tool to use. Will have a pledge/contract as part of the deal.

Vodacom don't seem to have much in the way of sim-only top up type contracts, so do you just get a pay as you go and then load each month?

Any sage advice on what works/didn't work would be great.
Another thread already outlining this would be great if it exists.

Airmobile or Melon both on MTN have affordable deals that are contract like. Else R299 from either vendor for the SuperFlex deals. If it runs out they recharge with their allowance?

Airmobile from afrihost
50 bucks a month gets you 2 gigs and 20 airtime. 100 bucks gets you 5gb and 50 airtime

I’m not sure they realise just how much the kids rely on their tablets these days. They need one they can call their own and preferably not some obsolete hand me down.

This! will probably start with the R50 option, already got an account profile at afrihost so easy to manage.
Thank you, none of the actual networks seem to want to play in this space, so MVNO (or whatever it is called) it is rather.

yeah, we're the luddites here. It will be a hand me down that is orders of magnitude more powerful than what NASA landed on the moon with. Our daughter has been the last one in her grade without a device. While we might have missed some stuff along the way, still happy with that decision as the kids don't seem to benefit much on their phones at this age. There is a huge push now for the "phone free childhood", so expect more coming from schools to enforce this. In saying that, she won a bloody macbook earlier this year so managed to sneak that in before an actual phone!

Not sure how this turned into a discussion on phones. A lot of the learning materials are digital so they require tablets to study.
