Named after King Shaka' father, the King Senzangakhona Stadium will cost R1.6 billion to build and will seat a crowd of up to 80,000 soccer fans...

The stadium will boast a 30-storey arch stretching across its entire length and will have underground parking for 10,000 cars.

Couldn't find the picture but in the Sunday Times the model looked very impressive. Wonder if they can pull it off?

weird.
wembley stadium in london was torn down for redevelopment in 2003...was meant to be ready in 2005 and wasnt, not they reckon 2007.

oddly parallel....soccer stadium, seats about the same, both have a big arch of sorts spanning the stadium, both *should* be ready in 4 years..but the delays at wembley were all unforseen, so it is obvious that you cant go by the "estimated time of completion" date in that situation.

wembley should cost £757mil. or around R8bil. how can the durban one cost R1.6?

my predictions:

late, way behind schedule, and about 3 times the originally planned cost.
I base this purely on the fact that wembley is so fscked now.

read from the heading "redevelopment"

So its still only a plan and they're hoping to get that built along with all the other stadiums by 2009 for the Confederation Cup?

News24's take on the report - http://www.news24.com/News24/Sport/Soccer/0,,2-9-840_1952456,00.html

Plans to invest hundreds of millions in a 70 000-car underground parking facility next to the stadium (that is not part of the official stadium contract) also have been given the green light.
- that's got to be either a misprint or one for the record books.

Speaking of Wembley Stadium, the model of the King (not even gonna try) Stadium looks very much like it... Pretty much identical with that arch thingy.. Is that a good or a bad thing ?

EDIT: 70000 car underground parking ?! That has to be one of the biggest undergound parking lots in the world :p
