Hi guys,
ive been using an LG dvd recorder for about a year now and im finally fed up with the k@k quality it is producing. i record from DSTV and my old LG dvd recorder (LG 320 gb) used to record and maintain a real decent picture! this one records hazy and ive tried all the settings and tried hooking it up to both av ports with the same poor quality. that one failed and unfortunately was out of warranty. so im ready to sell this one to a friend so he can use it as a divx player mainly.

can you guys recommend a new dvd recorder please.il be happy to try a different brand as i know the LG's have issues. Please let me know where the best place to get them would be aswell.
Also if there is any other option to record decent picture from DSTV? i will be willing to try a different route aswell.

I've had a Sony DVD recorder for a couple of years ... its great ... no problems, good quality! I cant remember exactly which model it was but its either the RDR-HX780 or the RDR-HX980. I bought mine from HifiCorporation.

I have had a Wharfedale HDD/dvd recorder now for about 1.5 years.... works awesome, picture quality is as you see it when watching it from dstv.

its got an HDMI port to connect to your lcd tv, supports all the nifty things like plugging in external hdd via usb and comes with a built in 160gb hdd where you can record most of your stuff and then edit it before writing to dvd, like say take out adverts... I am sure there is 'better makes' out there but have had not a single issue with mine and no regrets at all. You would most likely no twrite anything to DVD's anymore quite frankly once you have a hdd recorder... but nice to know you can, if you wanted to :)

I have used quite a few of these, and the Sony has the best and most logical menu system, and the picture quality is superb. If you find a Pioneer, they share the same menu system as the Sony.

Interesting thread this - I was also thinking of replacing my LG which I feel is rather lacking in features and usability - in fact I've given it to my old man who is using it as a TV tuner for an old plasma display I gave him.
I checked up on the sonys and they look very appropriate as a replacement for the LG I just have 2 questions,
Can the Sony also read an external HDD like the wharfedale and
can both these recorders (Wharfedale and Sony) copy DVD's to the HDD - I would assume they would not do commercial DVD's what with copy protection but what of a normal DVD where the copy protection has already been removed??
I'm sure you guys have tried this.
The LG refused to read an exteral HDD (only usb sticks worked) and it would not copy DVD's to the HDD even with the copy protection removed (i.e. a DVD ripped via a PC)

HDMI? how does that work. the current one i have is WIERD. it has an input for an antenna which i have to use (therefore poor quality)
can you tell me how your setup works if you dont mind

Be careful of getting a DVD recorder, DSTV has that copyright thing now that blocks them.

i need to read up on that.... but i have never had any problems

The Sony will not read an external drive as far as I know. (my model is two years old)
It will copy unprotected DVDs onto the HDD, as well as music CDs.
I hated the LG. It was crazy to me you could not watch a recording in progress, unless you pushed a button that started buffering. I gave my LG to my brother.

Not quite true. DStv works with CGMS-A, which allows you to copy content to the HDD recorder, but if you want to copy off the HDD recorder you will have to use a CGMS-A blank disc, which are near impossible to find here. Once you do that the recording will be removed from the HDD.
You can not copy off DStv on Demand on the SDPVR, as that is set to NO COPY, but you can copy off any channel on the HDPVR, which is set to CGMS-A COPY ONCE.

I have one of these ...

Which nullifies it all anyhow. I am not a major league pirate, but just frustrated when I could not find any CGMS-A discs.

Positively negative which LG did you have (the poor quality one). I just bought an LG (without the HD) not because it's a great brand but because there are no other choices! Every game, makro, house and home, hifi corp in Durban has LG only. I found one Sony at Pnp but it was way out of my price range right now. I saw hd recorders last year for R2000 but now nothing is less that R2800 (you guessed it the LG 320gb on sale price).
