As my netbook picked up something funny, and was overdue for a Windows reinstall, I looked at possible Firefox addons which would enable me to backup my bookmarks and saved passwords quickly and easily.

A bit of Googling unearthed SyncPlaces.

I installed it, and tried it out. The first run wasn't successful, so after a bit of RTFM I managed to get it to work.

You can save your bookmarks and passwords to a public FTP or Web server. (It should also be possible to save to your local hard drive, but that is something which I haven't tried out yet). If it is only your bookmarks you'll want to save, the file is not encrypted.

However, if you want to save your passwords as well, you'll also need to enter a passphrase in order to encrypt your passwords - this is to ensure nobody will be able to snaffle your passwords.

With SyncPlaces you're able to synchronize your bookmarks and passwords between two or more computers running Firefox.

I have been using this for one day only, but I'm very impressed with it, and will be using it more in future to backup/restore passwords and bookmarks.

Hope this will help somebody who'll need to backup their bookmarks and passwords in Firefox.

Libs.

Xmarks does the same job for me. All my PC's have everything synced.

+1 for Xmarks, previously Foxmarks. passwords, logins, bookmarks, even tabs!

Junk all that stuff & use the official solution: Mozilla Weave

Its planned to be integrated into ff4 I think. Right now its an addon.

weave has tab sync, history, password and bookmarks from other computers. yes, it's standard with ff4.
it's not cross browser, but it works like a dream.
in fact the weave server is cross plaftorm oss, but nobody wants to share too much in the browser market it would seem.
there was something about xmarks that used to annoy me. i think it was the inability to sync with opera and opera mini.
fennec also has weave. but that project seems to be going nowhere fast...
