New First Motorcycle..What to get?

Oops, must have been last years show, but it's happening this year again in June as well, Northgate again.

Lots of bikes to check out and bikers to speak to.

First time biker on a 1000cc monster = looking for trouble.. ;)

Though I don't personally think it's necessary to start on a 125.. I do think that starting out on something like a 600cc or larger is a bit bold.. :eek:

Aprillia's are very nice.. but I would never spend that amount of money on a 125..
I'd rather get a smallish "learner bike" (250cc is probably quite nice) .. get used to it, pass your drivers license, wipe off it once or twice (:D) and then get something bigger.. :)

Remember if you do your drivers test on a 125 or smaller then you are limited to 125 max.. - this is one reason why I'd get something slightly bigger..
 
Hmmm...how much should one expect to pay for a cheap 250? Nothing too old and still in good nic. Been thinking about getting a bike for a while now and wouldn't want to go smaller than 250 for the above-mentioned reason
 
Get a copy of the BarkEssay and read through the classifieds, thats how I got my first bike.
 
Im thinking of getting the Hyosung GT250R or the Ninja 250R,

So I guess the Aprillia is out of the picture :)

I am in the same boat as you Fanix and decided to get the Ninja 250R. Everyone is telling me I will want more power so I should get something bigger but if/when that happens then I can always sell the 250, easy to sell and good resale value from what i'm told. Also the price difference between a 500/600 and a 250 is big plus the fuel consumption.
I am hoping to have my licence by the time the new ninjas are available.
 
My first (well, in many years) bike is a Hyosung GV650 Aquila. Can't beat the bang for your buck. Lots of grunt but nothing ridiculous.

I ride the Hyosung and its not really that heavy i only weight 56 kg and im able to throw the bikearound sbend's quiet easy not having many problems with one little suggestion dont drop it :D i was side swiped and i just battled to pick it up.

They're going to tell you that because they want to sell you a bike. No-one I know has any trouble getting parts for their grey bike. Honda VFR400 is really nice if you can find one that has not been abused.

Is the Kawasaki 250 really that heavy (154kg)? That's 600cc weight.

I have to agree with what the other guys are saying, bigger bikes are actually safer. They have the power when you need it and they're easier to balance. You'll only get yourself into trouble on the more powerful machine if you act irresponsibly. I learned on an old GSX750. If you're learning you may want to get something without a fairing or take the fairing off. Plastic is expensive.
 
i am nearly 16 and my parents want to buy me a bike for my 16th... they said i must look for one that I like but I only have R40 000. I am intrested in the aprilia rs 125 but the bike costs to much new. what do you think about second hand aprilia???

R40000 is far too much to spend on a 125 IMHO .. especially if you're 16, I see your future possibilities as:

1) You'll "really get into" motorcycling and upscale as you get older.
2) You'll not get into motorcycling and switch to boring cars as you get older.

These are the routes that most guys have taken in my experience, I think it quite unlikely that you'll just keep the 125 as you get older.

If I were you, I would buy a decent quality 125, seeing as you have 40 grand you may as well get something slightly more stylish.. ;) But I would definitely not spend the entire 40 grand on a 125. Trust me on this one, you may now think that the 125 Aprilia is the most awesome thing since sliced bread (it is a very nice looking 125 I must say :D - and I would've loved one 8 years ago ;)) but in a few years time if you're still into bikes you'll have changed your mind.. ;)


Unless of course if money is no object and you have no possible reason to not spend 40k now .. :p

tnx for the advice.... i am realy into bikes and will probly get a bigger 1 when im older. but that's only in 2 years.... that is why i want something fast till im 18
 
I assume that that 40k doesn't include the budget for a good quality helmet and the other gear you should be wearing? Good helmets aren't R500 unfortunately...

I first looked at the Honda, but then I saw the Aprilia, and it stole my heart... Only drawback that I personally have with the Aprilia is that it's a 2-stroke, so it doesn't sound that cool on the road :(

I haven't seen the new 2008 Ninja, but it's due end of may, but I don't want to wait that long, I'm kinda hoping of buying my bike this week...

The reason why I am going with a small bike, is because this is my VERY first bike, I don't even know how to ride a bike, hehe! I won't have any problems learning, so thats not the problem. I just want something to start off, but I should be happy with it. I'm only 1.68m long, so the big and heavy bikes doesn't work for me :)

So what should I do?

your first bike should always be way cheap,i mean very cheap,its a rule of thumb
 
Depends on the mileage... If it has lots of k's on the clock, be careful. Those bikes get ridden pretty hard

I have to agree there. My dad has a BMW 1200GS and LOVES it!! but wouldnt be caught dead in the car.
