New game rig

Suggested:

PSU: Corsair TX750 (more than enough) Save R277

Screen: Samsung 2333SW (1920x1080 16x9 HD) Save R1135

Spend R1412 more on a GPU, which you will NEED for gaming at such a high res.

Wellll.. in terms of future-proofing if any upgrades happen on the board etc because of i7 glitches I will get the upgrade free.. Accidental support is there in case I need a new motherboard and my geyser happens to burst over my desk hehehe.. free upgrade/replacement.

and I'm paying... well a lot obviously but why don't you try guessing...

I would like to know though why you are spending 3.5k on a vga card from comx when www.pcint.co.za has the same ati 4870 for a lot less.

HD 4870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E DVI-I / TVO Toxic R 2,050 excl. R 2,337 incl. That is over 1000 bucks cheaper than your planning to buy. As is the monitor cheaper.

I mean check this out, HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E DVI-I / TVO R 2,399 excl. R 2,734 incl. that is still cheaper than the 4870 you plan to buy and it would be faster.

+1000 i got my 4870X2 from PCInt and I would recommend the OP to do it too! he only needs to get R1500 extra then he can get the 4870X2 now, avoid Crossfire problems, and save R2000 (because he would of bought another 4870 later on)

rather get 1 single 4870X2 for R5000 than 2 x 4870's for R3500 (R7000)
it's much cheaper and the 4870X2 will kill 2 4870's in crossfire (95% of the time)

......and......you can later crossfire those if you REALLY, REALLY wanted to, so it's more future proof too.

OMG

That just changed the picture completely, just mailed PCInt for a quote, thx a lot killadoob

My budget won't reach the 4870x2 atm, but I will definitely go for the 4890.

and LOL I am not stuck on the idea of Crossfire, it is just something I want to keep in mind for a possible cheap future upgrade.

Well 2 x 4890's in crossfire will beat a 4870x2 for roughly the same money.

2.7k x 2 = 5.4k and it will be faster as well, so the choice is always there for you.

and for now I doubt there's anything the 4890 can't handle, so you're SoRtEd mate!! Nice..

Be aware that over the next year the GPU market will get pretty interesting, with Intel entering the fray, and the new gen from the Red and Green Teams. Which look likely to blow the current gen out the water. So you may want to lay off really high end stuff and play older games/lower settings for a while, with a more bang-for-buck card, then upgrade to those.

And yes, I know, there's always a kickass new gen on the horizon, but this time it's DX11 cards and it looks like they might be a huge improvement, 8800GT style. Of course if you don't mind getting a 4870X2 and upgrading in a year anyway, then nevermind!

Rather phone them, there's a high chance you won't get a reply from them. :D

Thoughts on PSU?

yes killa, but only when it works :D

Also remember that you need a bigger PSU as well seeing that it is two different cards.

oh...and you need an xfire capable board..

also, that pretty much voids your upgrading capability.

the x58 boards can crossfire and sli considering he was intent on going the x58 route.

So that won't be a problem.

Well, there's a little review that has been done, where the GTX275 basically pawns the 4890 except for the XFX 4890 xxx edition.

see link : http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=745

So it's worth a look at the new cards on offer.

They look pretty even to me? 4890 ahead in some, 275 ahead in some, not a big difference in either case.

Also I bet if they tested 8xAA the 4890 would pull ahead. ATi has a fairly clear advantage in AA at the moment. They just plain do it faster, plus their cards have that extra bit of memory. Since it seems he's going with a 1920x1080 monitor, he'll probably want to crank up the AA, so it's worth bearing in mind.

I would say opt for the cheaper option in terms of the GPU (used ala prophecy classifieds also a good option with warranty saves you a ton), hold out until the entire deluge of next gen gpu's hits us in the Q4 - well only the green team will be here Q4 , team red is only expected in 2010.

ATi is expected in Q4...nVidia has been dodging the question, but obviously they'll be trying for Q4 too. Intel are definitely 2010, they aren't aiming for the high end yet so I suppose they're in no hurry.

well , the reports have surfaced in the last week, that ATI is holding out for windows 7 release, before releasing their DX11 gpu's :

http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2009/5/8/nvidia-first-to-market-with-a-directx-11-gpu.aspx

Yeah. And the release date of Windows 7 is....Q4 :p nVidia might beat them anyway, of course. We'll see.

Should be a very interesting round of cards. Might well end up with ATi winning the gaming benchmarks and nVidia winning the GPGPU benchmarks. I wonder who wins then..

I don't much care about who wins as long as I enjoy my new and improved gamign experience - depending on which brand I am running.

I had most of the current gen gpu's from ATI and Nvidia, bar the 4870 1GB.

4850, 4870x2 , 9800gtx, 9800gx2, GTX280 , GTX295

So I will be really keen on seeing what comes out and how they perform.

I am waiting for final quotes, but at the moment it looks like this:

MSI X58 Pro
i7 920
Sapphire 4890 1GB (lol, came a long way from 4770, thx a lot for putting me onto PCInt killadoob :D)
Samsung 2333SW
OCZ PC3-12800 3x1GB
500GB Seagate 32MB x2
Corsair HX620

Any final comments?

Thanks again for all the great advice, really appreciate it.
