Buying new headphones, have about R1000 as budget. I don't want to buy sh*t, and I don't want to go over R1000. Should preferably have a mic and great sound obiviously.

My pair of ChopperIIs just broke, and I was very happy with them.

At what am I looking at?

PS: Don't suggest Skullcandy. Just. Don't.

i got the razer pirannah and they are ok (Got them cause they glowed) :), do wear on your ears after an hour or so. I would recommend the Razer Megalodon as per Clan_Dice. if you can wait a week, i can give you advise on Alienware Tactx Headsets (Currently being shipped from the states right now). The reviews on those have been good (if you can believe an "impartial" review) :) I ordered the Alienware cause it has a retractable mic (yes i am a sucker for the unique gadgets) :)

Alienware

Razer Pirannah

For music they are awsome, but i hear they aren't that great for gaming.....do you believe that?

I've never had a better gaming experience than on my HD595's (basically same as the HD555's) although I do have the Xonar Essence STX. Of course you are going to need a decent sound card as any gamer/music lover should have. ;)

Ye, I've basically narrowed my options down to

Sennheiser HD 555
Steelseries Siberia v2
Steelseries 7H
Razer Megalodon
Razer Charcharias
Roccat Kave

The Senny would be great, although the only place I can find it is with Take2 and then it will take 3 weeks minimum to get to me. The Siberia looks a little cheap, while the Megalodon, Charcarias and Roccat are all a bit chunky. Of course looks don't really matter, but the sound does. The unfortunate thing is that one has to rely on reviews to fill you in on this.

The problem I have with all those I mentioned except for the HD 555 is that they are designed primarily for FPS gaming. While I do play CS:S quite a lot, I've always been rather comfortable with a cheap mic and basic sound. I want headphones that give me great sound when listening to music and watching the occasional movie or so. So with that in mind what would you recommend?

Also note that I just had a pair of Aerial7 ChopperIIs which were really great and delivered excellent sound. They were also the most comfortable headphones I've ever had and only cost me R700. I want my next pair to be even better in terms of sound and comfort.

Sennheisers definitely! In another league I guarantee you. Once you have a decent sound card, they will be brilliant for gaming too. LAst time I checked, Take2 had local stock.

They don't :( And prophecy says they've been discontinued. Take2 is only selling them via Amazon in US so it will take ages to get here. If I go that route I might as well wait an extra week and buy them in Canada for R200 cheaper. But it's such a long wait.

EDIT: Another thing that bothers me is the open design, and some reviewers say that it leaks a LOT of sound in and out. So what pair of headphones would you guys recommend after the HD 555s?

I have the Roccat Kave; really good headset for gaming, may be a bit bulky, but has superb build quality, goes well with my Roccat Sense mousepad and Roccat Kone mouse ;)

Dude they are available locally. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/312597-Grado-Headphones?p=5791805&viewfull=1#post5791805 PM him.

Even sound shops at shopping centres have them.

I have the Razer Charcharias. Very good for gaming and it's got an amazing bass that comes with it. Received quite good reviews with regards to music when I was looking at them at the end of last year. Some people living close to me don't like my late night action movies that I watch every now and then and I just plug in the headset and watch. It doesn't give that 'dead' sound if I can put it that way that my previous R150 ones did.

Value for money wise they're pretty great, but there are better ones out there if the budget allows. I didn't need superior sound, and they work 100% for me.

I bought a pair of Creative sound blaster arena headsets from the US for R500 and they are great for gaming / voip and music etc. I don't think they are common but I would definately buy them again and they are very comfortable with noise cancellation
