New HP ProLiant ML350 G5 server

Was playing around with two new servers recently, both HP's, but the G5 versions.

HP ProLiant ML350 G5 and the HP ProLiant ML310 G5.

Both are very quiet, and you don't hear them run if they're locked up in a room.

By contrast, we also have an older HP ProLiant ML350 G3 server - and this one sounds like a Boeing getting ready for takeoff I'm pretty sure you'll have to wear ear-protection in a room full of these noisy buggers...

Don't know if SCSI's on its way out, but both the G5 models have SATA disks, and these do feel fast.

Nice to play with new, clean servers, and not having to clean up a dirty chassis

Yes the new G5's are nice, I have a problem with one though. For some reason after a random amount of time the fans start spinning at full blast and keeps going till I reboot the server. The temps etc is find though. Phoned HP and I get the "make sure the firmware is the latest versions" answer, which it is. Might be the sensor that's faulty.

Got a new HP server today, with 3 2.5" scsi drives. Building it tomorrow, I'm actually excited.

unseat and then reseat the fans one by one if they are hot-swaps, servers have a tendency to ramp up the fans to compensate for a dodgy one

Those drives are dead quiet

Got one with 5 SATA's in - created a RAID 5 array with 4 HDD's and one spare. At 75Gb's a pop the loss of one for spare is worth it

Want to save up for a proper UPS and a new HP ML350 G5 with a couple of quiet SATA jobbies
