Hi there,

I've just got back from the USA with an iPhone 3gs (old bootrom) and ios 4.02. I'd like to jailbreak and unlock the phone so that I can use a SIM from the local cellular service providers.

My iPhone has never been jailbroken/unlocked. After having read through the forums i've gotten the impression that I need to downgrade to ios 3.1.xx and then jailbreak it with pwnageTool (or similar apps). Is this true or can I use some of the newer apps (limerain etc.).

Any help would be greatly appreciated - Pointing me in the direction of that perfect tutorial that waltzes me from my predicament to a working jailbroken/unlocked iPhone will get much good karma :-)

You cannot downgrade if you were not previously jailbroken on the firmware you wish to downgrade to, as you wouldn not have SHSH blobs stored on the Cydia servers.

Please go to Settings > General > About and post your baseband (modem firmware) version here so we can try to help you out.

Hey fxit_man,

My modem firmware is 05.13.04

Thanks!

Hey fxit_man,

Thanks for the info - i'll give it a crack and get back to you?

Is it a stable jailbreak? Is there known instances of people bricking their iPhone 3gs'?

Thanks!

Yep - No issues on 2 of my iPhone 4's so far

Bricking - not gonna happen

Cheers

hey fxit_man,

much much karma coming your way dude. It worked PERFECTLY!!!

Just a quick question, will I be able to upgrade to 4.1 ?

;) hope so lol

By the way, make sure to press the "make my life easier" button when you open Cydia on the top of the front page. That will allow you to downgrade firmware (not baseband!)

If you preserve your baseband, yes you will be able to upgrade.

On Mac you could use Pwnagetool , on Windows, Sn0wbreeze. Its not as easy as that though, you have to already be jailbroken using Pwnagetool supported jailbreak or something or other, and i'm not sure if limera1n is or isn't because I have a factory unlocked iPhone and I haven't researched much on it.

Not many additions really in 4.1 anyways, so what I would do is wait for 4.2 when the next unlock will be released for the new baseband.

That's why I usually recommend people get a factory unlocked iPhone - it's just much less hassle.
