The Grandest Jeep yet: New Wagoneer SUV teased ahead of September reveal

Jeep is planning to resurrect the Wagonner nameplate that was used on a large SUV range that the company built between 1963 and 1991.

Jeep’s then brand head Mike Manley, who now heads up Fiat Chrysler, announced back in 2016 that the company was working on two new flagship SUVs, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, and now they’re close to fruition with the reveal date set for September 3.

Manley said that the new SUVs would “push the premium boundaries of the brand”, Automotive News reported.

While it was initially speculated that the Wagoneer models would share a platform with the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, it is now being widely reported that the pair will instead use the Ram 1500 bakkie’s body-on-frame architecture. The Jeeps will also be built in the same Michgan factory as the aforementioned pick-up.

Wagoneer nameplate revived for family of premium SUVs, topped by tech-heavy Range Rover rival

Jeep is reviving the storied Wagoneer nameplate for a new family of premium SUVs and has previewed the range-topping Grand Wagoneer with a bold new concept that blends modern styling cues with nods to the iconic original car.

The first Wagoneer – launched in 1962 - is widely recognised as an early pioneer of the premium SUV segment and Jeep said “its return allows us to expand to a much more premium arena with new levels of design detail and advanced safety and technology features”.

The firm claims the Grand Wagoneer concept was designed with a dual focus on modernity and authenticity and “encapsulates the future of the ultimate premium SUV”. When it is launched in 2021, the Grand Wagoneer will supersede the Grand Cherokee as Jeep’s flagship model and compete with more upmarket models, including the Range Rover and BMW X5. It's not currently destined for the UK or Europe, however.

The production car will be available with a choice of three four-wheel drive systems, independent front and rear suspension and Jeep’s Quadra-Lift air suspension, hinting that off-road capability remains a priority despite the luxury shift.

Technical details remain unconfirmed, but the Grand Wagoneer concept features a plug-in hybrid powertrain, likely closely matched to that of the new Renegade and Wrangler 4xe PHEVs.

New Jeep Grand Wagoneer concept previews (screen-tastic) 2021 flagship

Jeep has finally taken the covers off its new Grand Wagoneer concept, which previews a production model scheduled to start rolling off the assembly line in Michigan in 2021.

Billed as a “rebirth of a classic and premium American icon”, the concept seems very close to what will go into production.

As a reminder, the original Jeep Wagoneer hit the United States market in 1963 as the first four-wheel-drive vehicle with an automatic transmission. The Grand Wagoneer followed in 1984, adding all sort of luxury.

So, what sort of direction will the new model take? Well, the new Grand Wagoneer concept boasts what Jeep describes as a “wide array of leading-edge premium technology”, including an electrified powertrain (plug-in hybrid, in fact), a choice of three "sophisticated" 4x4 off-road systems and a dash-mounted display for front passenger.

Interestingly, the Grand Wagoneer gains a third row of seats, which means it will seat up to seven. Jeep says the production model will feature air suspension, “unmatched” towing capability and “best-in-class” overall passenger volume. While the original Grand Wagoneer featured plenty of wood on its exterior, the new concept employs genuine heat-treated lacewood inside. So, there’s lots of wood ... and plenty of screens. Seven, in fact.

We’ve just seen the all-new Jeep Grand Wagoneer, the fancy-ass, LCD-crammed new luxury SUV Jeep wants you to go into a bit more debt to buy. But do you even want to consider a Grand Wagoneer without the option of sides slathered in tree meat, be it genuine or fake? Because wood paneling has been a Grand Wagoneer staple for decades. Could it still be possible on the new one?

The original Grand Wagoneer had several versions of its wood trim, including one that had the lighter wood piping just around the overall perimeter of the timber zone, and another option, where there were three sections of wood, front fender, door zone, and rear cargo zone:

The original 1963 to 1991 Brooks Stevens design featured fairly flat, slab-like sides that, while they did have some simple character lines, were really quite easy to clad in wood. The overall design of the car had enough small-scale detailing to support the extra visual elements of the wood and trim. It didn’t feel out of place because there was already contrasting shiny metal trim on the pillars, for example.

Disguised prototypes reveal visual changes from the original concep

The upcoming Jeep Grand Wagoneer luxury SUV has been spotted testing ahead of an expected 2021 launch.

Previously revealed in concept form, the new model will revive Jeep's Wagoneer badge as part of the marque's bid to better compete with premium European SUVs such as the BMW X5 and Range Rover.

Until now, prototype cars had only been seen sporting heavy vinyl camouflage, but these latest images provide a closer look at what is believed to be the production-ready car.

Minor changes from the concept can be seen, including a front bumper tweaked to accommodate ADAS safety systems and slightly redesigned headlight and tail-light clusters.

The prototype appears to be riding on smaller wheels than the 24in alloys used for the concept and it remains unclear whether the full-length glass roof has been retained, but few other concessions appear to have been made in readying the car for production.

New Jeep Grand Wagoneer won’t be built in right-hand drive ... for now

Jeep’s global boss has confirmed there are no immediate plans to build the new Grand Wagoneer in right-hand-drive form.

Christian Meunier, global president of the Jeep brand, told Australia media the fresh-faced seven-seater SUV previewed by a September 2020 concept would be produced in left-hand drive only, for the time being.

“For now, it’s not on the table,” Meunier said, according to motoring.com.au. “I think we will focus on the three-row Grand Cherokee, which is already a pretty substantial, pretty big SUV,” he added.

Meunier explained the gap would be at least partly filled by this new Grand Cherokee L.

“We’ll deliver high performance with this thing [the Grand Cherokee L]. We’ll cover some of the market with this product that potentially Grand Wagoneer could have done,” he said.

The New Jeep Wagoneer Reportedly Boasts An Amazon Fire TV

While we won’t know specifics about the new 2022 Jeep Wagoneer until its official launch on March 11, 2021, Autoweek has reported we can expect one thing: Amazon Fire TV screens integrated into the Uconnect infotainment system.

Fire TV is Amazon’s answer to streaming services, but it also lets you play video games, listen to music, and use other apps. And Jeep is going to be the first manufacturer to implement that software in an automotive setting. Autoweek reports that it’ll have the same interface as your Fire TV in your home, and you’ll be able to use your account no problem. Basically, you can start watching a show at home, then get in the car and keep watching from where you left off.

Jeep wants you to know that this isn’t going to be available to distract drivers, since the tech isn’t available while the vehicle is in motion. Only passengers can use Fire TV in that case. But the driver will be able to access it while in park. Always a bonus if you end up spending a lot of time in parking lots waiting for appointments nowadays.

Jeep might be a pioneer of the SUV game, but it has long missed out on one of the most lucrative segments in existence. But not anymore.

The American 4x4 brand, is launching three large Jeep SUVs this year, crowned by the Grand Wagoneer, a land yacht that will take on high end rivals like the Cadillac Escalade, BMW X7 and Range Rover. Its more affordable sibling, simply called Wagoneer, will take on products such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition.

But don’t expect to see these huge Jeep twins in South Africa any time soon as they won’t be built in right-hand drive format, although those wanting to buy a bigger Jeep might still be able to opt for the new Grand Cherokee L, which does have a RHD variant.

Interestingly, whereas the Grand Cherokee is based on a premium unibody architecture, the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are built around a more upscale version of the Ram 1500 bakkie’s ladder-frame chassis.

The Wagoneer starts at $57 995 (R870 000) in the US, and the Grand Wagoneer starts at $86 995 (R1.3 million) although the most expensive versions will test the $110 000 (R1.65m) mark when fully loaded.

Love them or not, the prospect of a Jeep that starts at $90,000 is sort of jarring, though it’s a testament to the brand’s growth that Stellantis evidently feels confident it can sell such an opulent full-size SUV.

Which leaves me, typography nerd that I am, wondering: Why did Jeep phone it in with the logotype for these vehicles?

If the typeface Jeep is using looks familiar, that’s because it’s quite a popular one. Called Gotham and designed by Tobias Frere-Jones for GQ magazine, this font family was first published in 2000. However, Gotham didn’t rise to prominence until Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign — or, more accurately, the iconic Hope poster created by Shepard Fairey.

Those uses basically cemented Gotham as the typeface of the 2010s, for better or worse. MSNBC, Saturday Night Live, Netflix, New York University and the late-night talk show Conan are just a few among the many entities that relied upon Gotham’s “grotesque” strength and modern-yet-mature form to cultivate new identities in the previous decade.
