New Lanseria runway opens

Cape Town - Lanseria International has started operating a new 3 000m runway, allowing the airport to push for broader regional and international flight route operators - ultimately giving passengers more choice.

The development and extension of the airport was completed at a cost R150-million and means the airport is now able to accommodate larger and passenger cargo aircraft, Lanseria chief executive Gavin Sayce stated in a defenceweb.co.za report.

Currently only kulula operate domestically to Cape Town and Durban, while Mango operated a flight route to Cape Town from the privately owned airport, north-west of Johannesburg, which is often used as a less-busy alternative to OR Tambo International.

Lanseria spokesperson, Claudette Vianello, told News24 Travel that the operators of the airport are in talks with a number of airlines, but could not disclose any at this point.

Despite its limited domestic schedule, Lanseria is South Africa's fourth busiest airport and is well-known for its large charter and private base, with 85% of all charters to and from South Africa operating out of the airport.

Future plans detailed in the report include a new instrument landing system, to be commissioned in the first quarter of next year and a new generation global navigation satellite system.

Pity it wasn't in time for the Guptas. Isn't that what their excuse was for landing at Waterkloof, the runway at Lanseria wasn't long enough?
 
Lanseria will not drastically increase traffic or flights. The airport is still way too small and facilities limited. As it stands, the airport can not handle more than 8 Boeing 737's at any given time. Even if there are 8 737's at any given moment, the terminals will be too small for the amount of passengers, let alone other visitors. If they ever will increase traffic and flights, it will only be within the next 10-20 years when they acquire more land around it and expand their current facilities.

The new runway is 170 meters longer (3047 x 45 meters) but it's much wider than the old runway which excluded a lot of operators from using it.
Waterkloof's main runway is 3353 meters long.
 
I hope it stays as small as it is to be honest. It is a pleasure going through there instead of OR Tambo. Quick in and out.
When you often have to do a 1 day CPT - Gauteng - CPT trip, every second counts :)
