Hey,

So my current laptop motherboard just called it a day after 5 years (Asus J52) and I am looking for a new one.

Specs of my now dead laptop:
Core i5-430M
4Gb DDR3 1066 MHz SDRAM
ATI Mobility™ Radeon® HD5470 with 512MB DDR3 VRAM
500GB HDD
Windows 7

The new laptop I need is going to be used mostly for browsing, office documents, and photo editing every now and then.
Looking to spend no more than R6500, but am worried I will feel quite a performance hit because of the lack of a graphics card. What do you reckon these two will be like?

Lenovo IdeaPad
Core i3-5005U
4GB DDR3 Ram
1TB HDD
Windows 8.1
Price: R5 999

Second Option:
Dell
Intel® Core i5-4210U
4GB DDR3 SDRAM 1600MHz
1TB HDD
Windows 8.1
Price: R6500

How big of a difference will there be between my old laptop and either of these two? And how big a difference is there between the two new ones?
Otherwise, any other suggestions are welcome

Go with the Dell. Better processor and just a better brand than Lenovo for laptops.

My counterargument is the updated Intel graphics in the i3. The i5 is only slightly better in performance but has hyper-threading.
The i3 should also use less power, so the battery life should be better. I would still add an extra RAM stick to both.

Buy Asus, dell or hp. Avoid Lenovo at all costs, the housing of my lenovo laptop cracked after a year. The laptop eventually broke apart and i had to replace it. My family still has an old(older than 5 years) hp probook 4710s, that runs perfectly on windows 7. Buy a reputable brand and you will be happy

The Dell is the better option performance-wise, but U-series processors are never my first recommendation, because they sacrifice performance for slightly longer battery life. I'd recommend the Thinkpad E540C because of the better integrated graphics (HD4600), the better build quality and wireless card and Windows 8.1 Professional.

This looks like a solid option.. Lenovo usually has bloatware that may take a bit of effort to remove and their build quality is not the best, but kind of what you can expect for the low price.

But in the hardware department they are competitive.
