I see myistore has them up.

Thanks to Core for jacking the prices up around R1,000 across the board for the updated Retina models.

Was under the impression there was already a recent price adjustment to account for the rand weakening.

So Apple lowers the price by R1000 and Core raises it by R1000.

There really needs to be another distributor in SA, how did Core manage to have complete distribution rights in the first place, surely that's massively anti-competitive..

A lot of history in that. In the early 90s it was Venture and Southern. IIRC, Venture closed their apple side while southern bit the dust. That meant core could do as they pleased.
 
Yoh... Seeing these prices...

Very relieved I settled on a MBP last year... could only afford the i5 processor - but at least I can pump in the RAM and save up for a 960gb SSD, which will make all the real-world difference.

Going to have to save BIG time to be able to afford a new MBA with the storage I would want... and unfortunately, appears as if the MBP is now going the same way... :(

But must agree with OP - serious thumbs-down in the general direction of CORE... :mad:
 
What do you guys do on apple computers that makes you spend so much on their laptops?

I have an iphone 5 and ipad 2,3.

Have dealt with mountain lion and mavericks BUT on a hackintosh, pity their laptops are so pricey.

They were quite reasonable not that long ago, but with the rand weakening as much as it has over the last while mac pricing is getting a bit ridiculous.

It's generally worth spending a bit more on a mac given the premium experience. Most of us here spend a few hours a day on our machines, so a few grand more is worth every cent if you keep them for 3+ years.

I use it, and overall it is a more pleasant experience than Windows.

Must admit I really enjoy using Mavericks and have spent an unhealthy amount of time trying to run it on my "hackintosh"

I know less than zero about Hackintosh - but several comments (and who's to know how much they know!) made on those various sites, suggest that the main drawback with a Hackintosh, is that it doesn't play very nicely with Apple udates/upgrades... ie. if Apple updates the OS, then the same needs to be done on the Hackintosh side, before you can update in turn?

Is that a fair point - and I'm being quite sincere in my question - I simply don't know?

But coming back to your earlier question - I'm in the academic world. I could write pages about why I prefer OSX to Windows, for the purposes of what I need to do. And whereas a desktop OSX is something I could quite easily settle for (i.e. Mac Mini), it's not portable. And I need portability.

So until someone can sell me a modded Hackintosh laptop that runs OSX, with a trackpad of the same quality as a MBP/MBA, and will take care of any update/upgrade bugs - I'm tied in to Apple. And I guess they know that. Actually - they don't care - but I'm tied in regardless. :) It will be a cold-day in hell before I willingly go back to only Windows...
 
Took delivery of a 13-inch 128GB 4GB model this morning and it's a thing of beauty!

Finally having native HDMI output is going to be awesome...apart from the fact that I already have like 8 very expensive cables in the office.

Does the price of the HDMI cable make it a better or worse one? Or are you talking about convertor cables of some sort?

Nah I mean that I now already have all the converter cables in the world so it's a bit pointless at this point in time.

But standard HDMI cables are super cheap and readily available.

Ja - this is the thing. I saw on DX they had one that did HDMI, VGA and DVI for something like $15. All the ones locally are around that mark. I haven't found any local third party that goes from minidisplayport to anything else.

Windows: Buy pro version if you want multiple displays
Mac: multiple display is built-in. Just, make sure you either buy one of our hideously expensive monitors or one of our overpriced converters.

Never mind - I'm just ranting because I lost one...

I expect a review to convince me just how awesome the update is.

Enjoy ! A stunning machine. Same spec as I'm toying with getting.
 
Well this is just a temporary machine while mine is being repaired.

Very tough going from 256gb to 128. I left it to finish migrating at the office.

Typo earlier it's not the 256/8GB model. If I get used to this Retina thing I might let my external screen go and opt for a 15 instead of a 13 come February. Although the battery life is a calling out to me.

That is an incorrect comparison.

New "midrange" model price: $1499. Old SA Price for that R18,999 vs new price R19,999.

New entry level model price: $1299. SA Price for that R16,999.

So you can have a) less for more or b) the same for more.

Same Dorrah, more Zar. We score, at core.

Other models similarly affected/exploited/raped.
