my brother in law has the 42" Sinotec plasma and I have the 47" LCD. The plasma is far sharper then mine, but saying that, I am extremely happy with my LCD. The only channel that looks cr@p is Hallmark.
SS1,2,3,etc look great. I have no hassle with fast motion images and the blacks are dark black, not purple.
I am running through a HTPC with when compared to a direct input is also not as sharp, but still, I am thoroughly happy.
It hasn't given me a seconds grief and HD/BluRay look surperb as well as XBOX.

My 2cents worth

I would say definitely do not go smaller than 40/42" for your viewing distance.
My viewing distance is about 3.8m and i am very glad that I went with the 50" Panasonic Plasma and not the 42", really dude forget about 32" for that distance.

I think my short list would be:
Either the one of the Sinotec's, either the 42" Full HD LCD or Plasma HD Ready - people seem to be happy with them and lots of bang for your buck. (sub R10k budget)
42" Panasonic Plasma HD Ready (around R12,500 budget)
50" Panasonic Plasma HD Ready (around R20k budget)

If you think you are getting lots of bang for your buck, you need to take a look at the new Skye 42" Full HD TV. It is great value for money, but will only be available in SA in about 4 weeks. They should retail at about R8999. Demoworld in Cape Town are going to be stocking the item (021 5577137). They currently sell the 42" Plasma (HD ready) at R7500. It is a great product and know of lots of people who are very satisfied. Great service too!

RAS?

I am struggling to find info about these Skye TV's. Where do they come from? Who manufactures them? Who is the distributor?
And to be honest, I have never heard about these TV's.

Game also sells the 42" Sinotec Plasma for R7499.00 and you get a 5 year guarantee.

I would go for a 32" Sony S series LCD or a 32" Samsung series 5 full HD. Both can be found below R8500inc

At 32" full-hd is definately not required and plasma is not an option.

I would go with a Samsung or Sony (can't remember the model numbers) for about R6000. They have better scaling engines then the no-name brands which is especially important when you will only be wathcing DSTV.

Here is a chart which can help you decide what size TV you need.

thanks gifs ... i was looking for this ... now I can prove a point to a mate of mine.....

@APoc84 ... the reason why 95% prefer the plasma is because of your viewing requirements initially posted. I also believe the plasma is the best bet for you.
LCD's are taking the market now purely because of economies of scale ... for your budget ... go for a 42" plasma with a 5 year warranty ... you will not regret it.

My Sony LCD bought some years back packed up and it costs as much to fix than buying a new one. In 5-7 years time you are going to buy a new tv in any case.

Also, if you have a 1 year left on the warrantee you will find that it is much easier to sell. I change TV's every 5 years.

Hi,

I actually saw a screen which might be one of these (looked like a 42" plasma) at the Spur in Hermanus... it actually looked great! The brand logo said "SKY" with three lines after it... maybe the "E" ?

I was really impressed - was watching SD SS3 (Rugby) and the picture qulity was very good.. smooth and no "pixelation" :)

Edit: Just did a search - it looked like this one: http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/11019726/Brand_new_Skye_42_Plasma_TV_LG_Panel.html

It had the volume and other buttons on the sideedge of the screen.
