Good day Everyone.

I had Iburst but since i moved we have no signal. It looks like IBurst are not planning anything soon in my area so i am left with no other alternative, ADSL (I cant believe i just typed that. /me gets bottle of jacks from the 'good' cupboard).

Since almost all of you have gone through the pain of getting a line i would like to get your advice.

1) Should i wait? Maybe you know of something comming down the line that would save me. (Thinking the SNO, but i dont have much faith in them getting anything done this year).

2) Whats the best of of ordering an ADSL Line, does it actualy help to walk into a telskum shop?

3) I need the line to 'dial' into work, over a RAS (I assume is VPN) connection. Does ISP matter in this case?

Thanks

1. Dont have an answer for you.
2. Go to the Telkom Shop, much better to work face to face with them and then when you have problems you can go see the person you know at the Telkom shop. (I did it this way and got better results everytime!)
3. I currently connect from home using RAS to my office. I use TelkomISP and WebAfrica all seems to work fine.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply.

Lets see what WBS have in store, else its a trek for me to the local Telkom Shop.

Another question:
I have a phone line in my place, I can receive calls and make toll free calls but i cannot dial any non toll free number. I tried to get the line activated and after 6 weeks gave up. Each time there was a different story and eventualy i found out that the call was logged as a 'New Installation'. Cancelled the order just to receive a call 4 weeks telling me the date for my installtion was set for 6 weeks.

At present i am not being billed for the line. When i do go to the telskum shop, what do i have to take with to make sure I dont get another Johannesburg Licencing Department Issue (Wait for ever just to be told i need proof of residence) and to get them just to activate the line.

Thanks guys,

Sincerely,

ZA_Medic

Same problem I had. Went to the Telkom shop and they sorted it out for me in 5 minutes when I had been calling the call centre for a whole week!

Just take your telephone number with you.

Ummm, I also grew up In Uitenhage. My whole life basicly. Even went to Muir from Std 2 all the way to Matric.

Freaky!!!!

Ask if self-install is possible.. could save you time + R404

Did that.

At first they said 'Self install is not available in your area', when i started questioning why they 'checked the system' and presto, self install.

Any ideas how long it will take them to activate my dormant phone line?

Thanks

wow, I also went to Muir std2 to matric ROFL

i only waited 2 days for my install. but im one of the lucky few :/

Looks like i have to take a walk to my friendly telkom shop. My existing phone line is still blocked, and if I am correct this should have been unblocked by now. The last thing i want if for the techies to wait for an active line before proceeding with the ADSL setup.

Looking at the number of muir people, we should all just move back into the black hole called uitenhage, meet at the local pub and save our bandwidth.

Ok, I got myself a Wireless Router NetGear and Some wireless cards.

When i moved into my new place there was a dialtone, but i could only make toll free calls.

Thursday/Friday Evening i was able to dial out to a toll free number. Saturday my line was dead, no dialtone. Sunday, Line still dead.

Here is a question for the group:
1) Do i have to do anything special for the modem to Synch? I assume it picks up automaticly?
2) What will it sound like if you plug a phone dirrect into an ADSL enabled jack? Would you still head a dialtone?

Thanks Guys

Same happened to me. I tried to reactivate my old line and ADSL at home (had it disconnected a couple of years ago) and within a day or so I had dialtone and could call toll free numbers only and if I rang my home number from my mobile, the home phone would ring. ADSL also worked. I then got clever and called, asking for self installation as I was already up and running. A few hours later, line completely dead...no nothing.
According to the chap at the Telkom store, the voice line wasn't ready yet but the ADSL was. They shut it all down so that I could not use ADSL without being billed until my analogue line was ready.
