New Local Programming Forums

Hi guys, I've recently resurrected Gamers Domain, and it is now hosted locally.

The main site is still under construction, but I have set up the GD Programming forums so long.

My goal with these forums is to create a local programming resource/community second to none, where any programmer, newbie or seasoned pro, can go for help, or to help out others.

You can come and post your projects, whether it be to brag about your mad coding skillz, or to seek advice on something that just isn't working how it should, or if you are looking to learn something new, maybe to round up a few BETA testers for a new program you're working on . . whatever it is, I aim to make GD as good as it can be.

I've assembled a bunch of talented programmers, of which, a few are former CTI instructors, who will be moderating the site, and helping out where they can.

Soon to follow, if all goes well, will be the main GD site, and the gaming forums, which will be for gamers, by gamers, and my hope is that it will become the same for the gaming community, that I hope GDP will become for the programming community.

I really want to contribute to the local gaming and programming communities, and this is my offering, I sincerely hope that this will be a benefit to all gamers and programmers alike.

I'm not going to RAS this post as I fell it's somewhat relevant.

The first thing I noticed is that you must not encourage the show me teh codize guys. I understand wanting to help new comers to programing, but doing this doesn't help anybody.

Secondly get rid of the categories:

• Java, C# , C++
• VB, Python, Delphi

The reason being, people tend to stick to their area, and noobs will post a obvious design problem under a specific language, when the language is not the problem. The best programming website in the whole world ever has solved this problem with tags. Although I monitor C# & .NET tags, I also monitor language agnostic tags such as "best practices" and "OO design". Maybe consider making more general categories and get people to specify their programming language as part of the post. That way each post/thread will get more coverage...

You'll need to get your mods on board, and formulate a vision for your site (maybe you've done that already), but those are my suggestions.

No problem.

The reason I think the tags work so well on StackOverflow, is firstly the vast amount of traffic they get, so just seeing what you're interested in would be difficult. Secondly it's a Q&A site not a forum/discussion site.

Stackoverflow has a posting system specially built for tags. phpBB is far from that.

Yes I agree it wouldn't really work. I was more using it as an analogy as to why he should split his forum into more general subsections, rather than per language...

Had a look at your forums and it seems the guy's answering the question seem to be student's or not to informed.

Well, that's kind of the idea at the moment, it is aimed at students.

But we do have more seasoned programmers on the site, they're just a little busy at the moment, with it being the end of the year and all.
Also, the users make up the site, so as the site grows, Q&A should become more varied and complicated.
